February is for Lovin'

If I had to make a Valentine's Day wish list, it would go something like this...

1. This dress. Nothing like a fancy dress for a romantic dinner out. // 2. A red lamp. I have plans...that require mood lighting, apparently. // 3. This lipstick. Well...more of it actually. It's my new favourite! // 4. Love poems. To read aloud. Wink.// 5. Some Noodler's Ink. I'm thinking a bright red would be perfect for writing some love poems of my own. Double wink. // 6. Everlane cashmere sweater. Because, well...cashmere. // 7. Everything's Coming Up Millhouse tee. Just because.

Yes, I realize Valentine's Day is a ridiculous, made up holiday for the greeting card, chocolate, and diamond companies, but it's still fun to celebrate LOVE and COMPANIONSHIP and TOGETHERNESS.

But really, we should be doing that everyday any way...right?

Nostalgia

Memory is a funny thing. I can remember the faces of the custodians at my elementary school (and one name!). I can remember the names of all of my teachers back then, and what t-shirt I was wearing in Grade 6 when we made a video for our class pen pals (it was a Beverly Hills 90210 one). And there are a lot of things I can't remember that I wish for desperately.

Now, many of you may know that I am a bit of a hoarder. Speaking with my step-mom about some of my dad's odd behaviours, I know I come by it naturally!! This is my way of retaining physical things that prompt my memories that can't surface naturally. I cling to those moments of remembering, and they are more important to me than so many other things. Nostalgia is a powerful feeling.

I was cleaning out some boxes in my basement full of stuff that never made it upstairs with the rest of my scrapbooking stuff. In some of these boxes are what I like to call "memorabilia", things I can't bear to throw out in case I lose the memory associated with that item.

Things like, pieces of scrap paper with random notes written on. Brochures from travel destinations. Bookmarks from a childhood Reading Fair. Receipts, ticket stubs, stationary sets, you name it.

I want to share some of them with you.

This first item is a collage of photos. My friend Cheryl made this for me for my 18th birthday I think. She made one of these for all of our friends that year. It's covered in precious high school memories.

Halloween party at Sarah's house. Celebrating Ashley's 18th birthday at her house, drinking cola with Scott. Grad ceremony and party. Hanging out at Andrea's after the grad party. Camping that summer at Michelon Lake.

I am still friends with most of these people. We see each other a handful of times in a year and it is not enough.

 A clown stationary set I got from an aunt. I didn't want to just use it to write letters on and give them away...it was considered too precious. I wrote lists of books I wanted to read on some of the pages. I also cut out every "recommended reading" article I could find in magazines. The bookmark is possibly from one of those Reading Fairs we use to have at Menisa, where you could buy new books or bookmarks right from the group that set up in the library. My love of reading started early.

My University of Alberta ID card. Up until a couple of years ago, I still remembered my ID#. The password I gave myself to access the UofA net is still the one I use today (with a few security additions). My Kindergarten "yearbook" and photo. Dad painstakingly printed the names of all my classmates in under their photo. When he got up to take a break, I grabbed the book and wrote in my own name. We forgot it was "picture day" that morning, so I was just wearing a regular school outfit, nothing fancy. I look like Lucas (no smile!)

Do you other Canucks remember two-dollar bills! I keep things with my grandparents writing on it. Birthday cards, notes, letters, anything I can find. I already cherish those things, and I know that when they pass I will cherish them even more. This note is from my Dad. It's a typical dad note. His nickname is Skye because he was born in Montana: Big Sky Country.

Found! Sci Fi

So I read Will Wheaton's blog. I write that like it's a guilty pleasure or something. Like I'm embarrassed by the fact. I'm not. He's a good guy.

And thanks to him, I have recently re-discovered an actress - Felicia Day - that I had seen in other things (Buffy among them), and was glad to run into on the web.

And thanks to her, I have a list of videos I need to find!

I guess that's it...I wish I had these links in the middle of winter when I had nothing to do but hunker down and watch web-based tv! Now that it's trying to be spring out there, I don't want to be stuck in front of a monitor!

This post is dedicated to...jackalopes

As per one of my "New Year's Do-Dads" I want to play more with my paint and art. My latest Lovely is a nice step in that direction, but I started her last year, so she sort of doesn't count (gasp!)

I've been playing and experimenting with some mixed media pieces that were really exciting at first, and now I don't know what to do with them.

I need something simple that I can complete in one shot. I need some inspiration.

I need jackalopes.

Some people love Santa or the Easter Bunny, but I love jackalopes! **SPOILER ALERT** Even though they aren't real.

I am thinking of dedicating a wall in my house to jackalope art.

Dude...that's a great idea! I'm glad I thought of it!

And maybe with some of my own art up there as well...something that is totally awesome and I can finish in one sitting, so it doesn't end up in a pile on my desk with other stuff that is sort of related piled on top and then it gets moved below the desk into no-man's land where there is no escape and no salvation.

Also, what a slick Halloween costume that would have been! Maybe next year...

Christmas Countdown Calendar (speaking of that...I need to wrap today's...)

Christmas Concert...this is us getting ready. Lucas wanted hair like mine, but it's just too hard to replicate! Then he wanted to take lots of pictures before we left. But he didn't want to wear his tie, and he thought we were sleeping over at the school and that also didn't sound good!

Want to hear a funny story? So, I ordered some pictures the other day to include in my Christmas letter. I'm sending 60 letters, so I needed 60 wallet prints, so I ordered 60 wallets (can you see where this is going?). Unfortunately, on Superstore's website they don't tell you how to order your wallets. What they should tell you (in large, bold print, with flashing lights and arrows) is to take the number of actual photos you need and divide by four.

So when I thought I was ordering 60 pictures, I was actually ordering 60 sheets with four pictures on each sheet. Oh my...do the math and that's 240 actual photos. So I have 180 extra pictures, on 45 extra sheets.

Now I have to come up with some super creative ways to make use of these bad boys. Russ asked if I couldn't just use them in the letters next year as well? HA!

But, on the plus side, aren't we super cute!?!?

I have a fun post in mind for tomorrow! Looks like my mojo is back...Hooray!

charity begins at home

History...there are a bunch of random events and moments and thoughts that have worked together to get me to the charity-giving I am at today...
A couple of years ago (or maybe last year, I can't remember), I wanted to do something big and charitable at Christmas. Since I am not good with time management (gosh, that's an understatement!) and didn't think a volunteer commitment was feasible, I figured I would give $$, because everybody needs money. I also wanted to give this charity as a gift to others who have given me so much. So I bought some goats from World Vision, and wrote nice notes to my parents and grandparents and it was very mushy and wonderful.

Everyone is asked randomly throughout the year from coworkers or family to donate to this or that cause - a marathon, a run or walk, a sick friend or parent - and one year when I got all my tax receipts, I realized I had donated to MS Society twice through different people and different events. And I thought, what about all those charities that don't have runs and marathons and silent auctions? Why can't I choose what charities I want to donate to, and not have friends and family decide for me.

So last year I started donating monthly to various organizations. I set myself a budget, a maximum that I would stick to. If a friend or family member asked for money, I would have to work it into my budget. I did pretty well, and donated to a lot of causes last year (that was the double MS year!).

While going through my receipts last year, I noticed that a lot of the charities that had received money from me were cancer-related. That's fine and all, but I bet most of the charity dollars spent in Canada in a year go toward cancer-related organizations. So this year I decided to change things up a bit.

I picked Edmonton-based charities that do work directly with people. Edmonton's Food Bank, Donate-A-Ride and Inner City Housing Society are just some that I picked this year. My last big cheque of the year is going to the Wings of Providence. They help women and children who have experience family violence.

The Internet makes it easy to donate. A lot of charities are set up with Canada Helps or United Way, and you can donate online with both of these to specific charities, or to their general fund.

Christmas isn't (just) about getting presents. It's about helping those around you that can't help themselves, whether that be a family member, friend or stranger. Christmas can be a lonely and difficult time if you don't have the proper support network. I can only imagine that while the amounts I donate don't add up to much, they still matter in the long run.

So consider others this season. If you can't donate money, donate a toy to Santa's Anonymous, donate your muscles to shovel your neighbour's sidewalk, or donate your time to the local Food Bank or shelter society.

Reading Player One: What Will Become of Us, A Novel in Five Hours by Douglas Coupland (I actually finished it the other day...it was very excellent)
Watching The Walking Dead on AMC, and lots and lots of old movies on TCM (our box is full of them!)
Creating headbands and a patchwork bag for my brother's girlfriend, and playing catch-up on other Lime Door custom orders
Thinking about the Christmas season and what I want it to mean to me, and traditions I want to start for Lucas, getting my Christmas letter ready to go today...left that to the last minute didn't I!?
Listening to SiriusXM U, an indie rock station. Think alternative alt rock. And I love it! I keep a pen and notepad handy in the car so I can write down songs that I like, cause I know I won't remember them past the next song. With this station, I write down every song! Also, The Arcade Fire's newest album (The Suburbs). I originally only bought "Ready to Start" and then I saw them on SNL...so I had to have the rest of the album!
Eating snack mix by the bucket, homemade bark, cream cheese and nacho chips (the most dangerous snack ever! that I am now trying to avoid so I don't start looking like Santa!)

My hair is doing it's best to be perfect!
I am trying not to think of the fact I need a nice dress for Russ' office party in less than one week.
My Christmas tree is still in the box!
Lucas is sick of getting books for his Christmas Countdown Calendar...but he's got 2 weeks left of this, so too bad!!

We got snow last week! YAY! And it's been sort of trying to snow this morning.

"It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas, every where you go. There's a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well. The sturdy kind, that doesn't mind the snow..."

Now, that's a Christmas carol I enjoy!

Have you seen the new Starbucks Gift Cards? They are designed by Jonathan Adler for Project Red, and they are gorgeous! I bought some for Lucas' teachers...and now I want some of my own! So I showed Lucas and told him that he and Poppa have to get one to put in my stocking. And then he asked me when they were going to go! He's either: 1. Worried that he won't have enough time to go to Starbucks before Christmas or 2. Excited because going to Starbucks means he gets a big cookie!!

this one is for Daryl, so one of his kids that reads this blog will have to pass it along! I walked passed an office on Jasper the other day and could not for the life of me figure out what the name of the company was! And then it clicked! And I thought Daryl would get a kick out of their logo (he really likes "type" and fonts and whatnot). So, go to this website and check out the sweet logo...it's such a nice play on type that I had to make a mental note. p.s. if you can't figure it out, they have taken an "a" and turned it so it sort of looks like an "e" , thereby turning their name "id associates" into "ideas"...very clever!

I miss blogging...I have been a a "bad blogger" lately, and while I have lots of ideas of future posts, I just don't have the free time lately to post anything. With my blog makeover I hope to have a more clear idea of the things I want to post and be more excited and organized with my posting.

We decorated two gingerbread houses on Sunday at two different houses. Russ and I went to a party on Saturday night that was so wonderful and I got to catch up with some friends I don't see that often. And I didn't eat (or drink) too much! YAY!

I am computer-confident, except when it comes to photo editing and that sort of thing. But ask me to sort out your email, or figure out something in Word and I'll do my darndest!

I would much rather make things with my hands, a pair of scissors and some glue! And paint. And ribbon. And something vintage or found on the ground.

I'm not much of a cook. I don't like to follow recipes. I really love to try new combinations and new things, but only if it's not overwhelming!

I don't like it when things take too many steps (hence my irk with Tim Holtz). If I can do it in four steps, then tell me in four steps, not eight, or eighty. Jeez louise.

Same thing goes with directions on how to get from place A to place B. Forget short cuts if they are too confusing. I would much rather give someone the most direct route, with the least amount of turns. Even if takes them a bit longer, at least they will get there! This comes from my time spent with "InfoReg", and Campus Ambassadors.

I love sending and receiving mail. I wish I received more fun mail! But not junk mail, or addressed ad-mail, or flyers.

I like fashion. Not high, fancy, designer fashion. Regular folk, neat-o fashion is more my cup of tea. If I'm wearing something fun, then yay! But I don't spend my life worrying about what I wear. Sometimes you just need a pair of mittens, and if they happen to be designed for "hitting the slops" and don't match your coat, or anything else you own, then so be it.

I love coffee. Strong. Delicious. Americano is my favourite order anywhere. I don't like Tim Hortons, for many reasons, but the major one is that their coffee tastes like gack. I will never understand why someone will go out of their way to get a Tims coffee. Yuck-o.

I buy organic, like, all the time. If there is an organic option for something on my grocery list, I take it. I figure, I can afford it right now so why not. I also read those little stickers on produce to see where it came from, and will choose Canada first, then the US over any other country. If the product comes from too far away, I won't buy it. I mostly don't understand why we have to get our apples from California, when I've seen the beautiful orchards in BC, our neighbour...duh. Also, tomatoes...they come from a greenhouse this time of year anyway, so why not choose a greenhouse close to home. Oh my.

I heart games. Board games, card games, mind-games. I love Sudoku, and Cattan, and Carcasonne, and Chutes and Ladders, and Crazy Eights, and Shanghai, and Ace to King, and Gin, and Crib, and Uno, and etc. The Seibold family is "famous" for its card-playing skills. That is one requirement of any reunion: a crib tournament, and some pinochle tables. My sister, dad, and grandpa are master card players, without even having to really try. I'm not 100% skilled at this, but I can hold my own!

This list was more just for me. To get it out there. These are the things that make Lisa, and some of them aren't so bad. I have been doing a lot of self-doubting lately, and it's kind of got me in the doldrums.

I have been so tired lately, and I can't tell if it's a "I've been keeping busy and not slacking off so I'm just tired" kind of tired, or a "something is wrong with me, and I haven't slowed down enough to figure out what it is" kind of tired. Hum...I have been busy lately...

Also, in reference to this post from last week, it's still not working out. I need to slow down, and take some things off of my to-do list (or pawn some off on Russel and Lucas), and focus on Lisa this week! But I have been procrastinating on some Lime Door custom orders (they keep getting bumped for other things), so I'll readjust and focus on Lisa and Lime Door this week!

I have made some new styles of headbands that I will have to share with you! They are quite nice, if I do say so myself.

And I really really need to re-vamp the blog. I have been talking about a blog makeover for ages and ages, but just don't have the time to do the research and work that needs to happen to make it happen. But a real-live due date might have the ability to put a fire under me! So look forward on your Microsoft Calendar to Friday, January 14th, 2011 and mark that day as the day "You Know How I Roll" will change, like, for real!

bah humbug?

So some of you may have been picking up on some of the apparent "anti-Christmas" sentiments I have been posting these last few weeks.

I don't hate Christmas...not entirely.

I love Christmas lights and putting up the tree (and reminiscing about all the homemade ornaments that go on it!).

I love hanging out with my family in our nice clothes.

I love turkey dinners. No, wait. Love isn't a strong enough word for this people...I lurve turkey dinners and if one more person says to me "aren't you just sick of turkey?" I might just go ape-$*$^ on their @$$! I could eat a turkey dinner every day...I could.

but...

I hate all the waste that comes with this season...gift tags and wrapping paper and cards and shopping bags all end up in the garbage when the season is done. It really gets my goat.

I hate "all Christmas music, all the time" on Easy Rock. Some songs should not be Christmas-a-fied. And some people just should not sing Christmas music.

I hate how people go crazy and spend beyond their means, and obsess over the perfect gift, and clutter the malls.

I hate how people try to top last year's gifts. I hate how gifts have to have a large price tag to mean something.

Case in point: my cousin, who is fourteen, lost her last cell phone so her parents ran out and bought her a new iPhone (with the $700 price tag that comes with), and now that she's had some time to use it has decided she doesn't like it after all. They also bought her a $500 video camera for her actual Christmas present. Did I mention she's fourteen!?!?

When I was fourteen I got some tapes that I wanted and a Sega Genesis to share with my sister. And that was pretty much it. And it was great!

One of the reasons I decided to do an advent calendar/Christmas countdown for Lucas was to try and make every day in this Christmas season special, and make it less about the 25th. He's getting something small every day (like a book, or a puzzle, or a treat, or a special outing), and we will only buy him one special gift to open on Christmas Day.

I am not trying to be all "holier than thou" and high-and-mighty here. These are just some aspects of the season/holiday that I don't understand.

I Lurve...Paper Chains

I made some for my Halloween decor, as I was saddened to remember recycling my previous stash. But I held on to the latest ones! I just want to cover my house in them...yum

And for a little girl's birthday party. I am also in love with paper pom poms and turned down a possible sale on Martha Halloween ones at Michaels in favour of making my own. Check out the patterns!

I used some old pattern paper that I found stashed away (and am now trying to clean up!). I cut them in to very random shaped circles, then stitched them all together with my sewing machine. These guys are now strung up in my "studio", and I love them!!

I've been wanting to try my hand at making mobiles, but I couldn't decide on an appropriate medium. but paper would be just about perfect...

I really want to get back in to making simple small crafts. I went a little crazy with my craft show stuff...and it was very overwhelming in the end. I got away from why I love doing it and I lost my focus for a bit. But I guess on the plus side it help me figure out what is important, even if I lost site of it.

And this was your DIY for the week. Make some paper chains, or paper garlands this weekend! Have some fun, and play...you'll appreciate the mindlessness of it!

Treasures

I made this little pocket for our neighbour. She noticed the pocket I keep my iPod in, and was surprised to see I had two different ones. So when I told her that I made them, she got all excited and started listing off ideas!

This is to put her little found treasures in...like buttons and beads and little trinkets she picks up as she wanders through life. The other night (the 20th) she came over to play with Lucas, and ended up sitting beside me on the green chair watching me finish sewing the pocket!

I hope she loves it for a long time.

Portland...I miss you

This Portland Bingo print is quite possibly the most awesome thing I have seen lately! I'd be close to getting a "black out" if I was playing this particular bingo game (I don't remember seeing an elk statue and we didn't get to the OHSU tram, and what the heck is the "tiny horse" thing all about!?)

I missed...
- the start of fall...all those beautiful yellow trees are making me weak in the knees!

- felt things...we saw an amazing art installation in this funky store in Portland...musical instruments and a bicycle and a stop sign all made from felt! Lucas really loved it! There were smaller pieces you could buy (toothpaste, shaving cream, among other things). Unfortunately, the bus was arriving right then, so we had to leave the store (and then we promptly got off the bus because it was packed and we figured we could walk faster!). I wish I had taken down the name of the artist. Maybe I got a photo of the front window...

- socks...knitted socks. this was an item on my 30 B4 30 list that I just never got to. I have a crazy-awesome knitting friend that I will have to call for assistance on this matter!

- a birthday list! apparently I forgot to do that before I left, so I really didn't get any gifts! oops!

I did not miss...
- the lethargy and headache and weird feeling in the back of my throat I get after sitting in my paint-stinky office all day...it still reeks of paint fumes in here, even though they painted a month ago!
- the mess that is my house (I missed my home, but not the mess, get it yo!?)

I miss Portland already...
- the beautiful public transit system Portland has...we pretty much walked, bussed or trained it everywhere we went. and it was so fast and easy and wonderful! Right away Russ could see I was falling in love, so he reminded me not to get used to it!
- the ocean...we only went one time, but it was enough to make me very nostalgic and at peace, and the longing was too much for me to handle

- Powell's Books, the city, the people, being with Russ and Lucas all the time...it was kind of heavenly!

Can you even believe it? I'm thirty today. Oh gosh...just typing it makes me quiver a little inside.

I will have to do up a real post with all my life thoughts and perspective on the last 30 years of my life, and what I think will come in the next 30!

But for now, I just want to go have a beer with my boys! And maybe get a tattoo...!?!?

- "Shuffle all songs" is the best way to listen to my iPod

- On that note, don't you love it when you hear a song on the radio and think "I need to own that song" and then you hit shuffle on your iPod and it starts to play?

- I am totally starting to get really excited for my vacation...Lucas' teacher even gave us some "material" to "review" while we're away so he doesn't get behind...ha!!

I made a little painting to hang up at work. Once I have finished all the little details and made sure it's secure in its frame, I'll post a photo. It's just a watercolour of a leaf, but it's nice. I made it to match the colours in our new office...which is so nice by-the-way.

I am thinking of renting a table at the craft fair our Community League is hosting in November. If any of you would like to join me, share a table and maybe sell some crafty things, let me know. I'm not sure when the deadline is for getting the table, but I'll get you that info if you are interested.

I had another crafty-business project in the planning process but it got sidelined once birthday and school season started. I'm hoping to start working on it again later in the year and (fingers crossed) have something up and running in January/February. I'm really excited for this...I have lots of doubts about it being a success, but I have to try, or else I'll always wonder if I could have made something of it...

I love you all, and I promise I won't be away again for so long...I missed you!
