Hail Hail 33!

I am in "Awards of Excellence Submission Mode" at work right now. And as soon as I'm done with the mind-numbing SAMENESS of those (tomorrow tomorrow tomorrow...just get through tomorrow), I get to jump right in to altering purchase agreements and sales documents for our 2014 specs. Yay me! That being sad, I find if I plug my headphones in and put on some good tunes I don't get bugged as much and I get more work done!

These are some of my favourites right now...my must haves to keep me sane during the day.

What's "music to your ears" lately?

Groupie

It is my birthday in one week. I am at a cross roads in my life and this date that should be filling me with joy is instead looming upon the horizon. A deadline. A line in the sand. The third act. A beginning and an ending? I am struggling with how I want this blog to continue. I am not sure if it will make it through. For now I am moving towards a simple sharing of photos and a few words. There are so many beautiful moments in this life, and memories to be made and shared. I want to share that and focus on that now. And not on what might be. I am done with that part of me on this blog. My secret that is not a secret, because I don't know how to hide my heart very well. I don't know what tomorrow will look like, but today I can be happy in this moment and in this memory of a lovely, beautiful, wonderful simple night.

I always feels so special when I go to a Ben Sures show. He always seems so genuinely happy to see me. He asked if he could have a hug! He messaged me the next day, thanking me for coming to the show and apologizing for not being able to chat! He is such a lovely man, and an amazing musician and story teller. Please find his music online, and experience the quirky, soulful, sexy sound. He has all of his CDs available for sale on his website bensures.com, and for sure the public library has some! I am beyond happy that I can support an artist that I truly respect and admire in my small way.

Sometimes a simple smile can make someone's night. Go ahead and make someone's night...

Secret Streetcar Concert

At his "Weekend That Completely Blew My Mind" show, Ben Sures mentioned an upcoming show that required an invite to access the ticket purchase. A show on a streetcar! I had seen a photo on his website or Facebook of him performing in a streetcar and it excited me! So I knew I had to jump on this opportunity. He told me to message him to remind him to send the invite, but I woke up (late) the next morning and it was already in my inbox. Oh you...

So I confirmed BFF's anticipated attendance, and snatched up two tickets. And then waited...when you are excitedly anticipating something, it can take a long time to come!

We arrived early, parked - after taking a little detour around the block because I'm an idiot - then sat around looking cool, waiting for the fun to begin. I felt my head swell a little when Ben showed up and walked right over to us to say "hi, how are ya". And then took our picture with is phone! HA!
This is the picture that I took of us...I'm getting pretty good with the self portraits!

And then Ben asked us to watch his stuff (while he hits the head...wink). My head is pretty much floating above my body at this point. So we wait, and wait, and everyone by now has boarded the trolley. But we assume that they won't leave without the entertainment, and we are correct!

So we get on board and take the last seats remaining, and Ben sits across from us. And asks me how old my son is again (we got on the topic at his last show) and I tell him 7, and he pulls out a little neon green Ben Sures t-shirt and asks "will this fit him?" HE MADE MY KID A T-SHIRT!!! I probably made a squealy noise and said erhgalskdo-yes! Or something along those lines. And then I asked BFF if he thought it would fit me! Ha...no was the answer there.

And then we started on our journey. We had to stop at the end of the bridge and turn off the engine so our conductor could watch and listen for thunder and lightning. They won't make the trip if there is lightning in the area. When he was confident we were good-to-go, we headed off again.

And then we stopped in the middle of the bridge and Ben played his first set! It was amazing! I maybe sang along a little bit...and tapped my toes a lot! And glared at the drunkards sitting in front of us. They actually started talking louder, because they couldn't hear themselves over the music. Um...okay?!

Oh man...the rainbow! You could see both ends!! That never happens...it was completely magical.

Once he was done his first set, we started up again and moved on to the end of the bridge. We had a little break, during which Ben sold - and signed - his CDs. BFF picked up a couple, but I decided to stay on the empty car.
I hate it when my hair does that thing on the side...that's your ear...inside joke...

We started up again - sans drunkards - and headed for the bridge once more to hear a second set. And it was just as amazing as the first. Except this time Ben was pretty much standing right in front of us! Whee!! He is such a flirt...wink!

When he was done that set - in which he played a new song about having a crush on a librarian, and we did some Folk Aerobics - we headed to the tunnel. And then he played his "encore"...in the dark. It was so beautiful. So perfect. Something that will live in my memory forever.

And then the lights came up, and we were done and headed back. Once we were back on solid ground, I interrupted a CD-signing and got a lovely hug from the man himself - I am such a groupie - and we were off.

We ended the night at the Next Act pub. I ordered my favourite gin + grapefruit beer, and we shared a plate of hummus. The waitress - in her fabulous floral pants - commented on our typical Canadian behaviour when we each offered the other the last of the food on the plate.

This was an amazing night. Amazing...for so many more reasons than I could ever share here.

If you ever get a chance to see a concert on a streetcar, I highly recommend it! It was magical I tell you, MAGICAL!

p.s. On our return trip I totally spotted this lovely lady out the window. But BFF commented that it would be kind of creepy to shout her name out the window since we have never actually met in real life, and she couldn't actually see me in the train, not that she would recognize me if she did. And then she posted a pic on Instagram of the very streetcar that I was in, while I was in it! So I left her a creepy comment on Instagram instead! HA! Hello Erin!

A boombox can change the world.

Currently a little bit obsessed with this song right here. And by "a little bit" I mean I sing the last couple of lines all the time (even out in public...gasp!) and I am even considering making totally made some art for my living room featuring said lyrics.

Also, isn't Julian Casablancas the hottest?

Or whatever....

but you've got to know your limits with a boombox.
This was a cautionary tale.

Double or Nothing

I realize that I already shared these photos and these layouts on my blog (here, if you want to re-live it with me!), and the layouts also appeared on the TM blog (here...cause I need to get more traffic to that site ;) But I really love these layouts, and these memories so I am dedicating a full post to them. And if you scroll all the way down, you'll get a bonus layout as well! AND if you hit up the TM link you'll get an additional bonus layout! I'm really in a giving mood today...

@the Arden, January 25 2013 Ben Sures
I am really loving tone-on-tone stuff for scrapbooking lately. And triangles. (And chevrons...but that's another story)

Live & In Person, Ben Sures
(I totally had my camera on the completely WRONG settings for those photos....these next ones are better, I promise!)

Dear BFF

Please note: I never scrapbook in this size! 12x12 is just too much for me. But if you notice, I pretty much just made an 8.5x11 page on a 12x12 sheet of paper. I'm clever that way. Also, like the "Nadine & Lisa" layout I made (see this post), this one is going to have some mushy journaling in the glassine envelope as well. Awwww....

I hope you enjoyed this monster of a post. I realize that many of my readers are not scrapbookers, but some of you might have a hobby that you enjoy more than anything. And that you use to de-stress and relax, and create something beautiful. For me, that is scrapbooking! And I enjoy sharing my passion & hobby with you, even if you can't relate directly to the specifics. I have a feeling that you still "get it".

Live & In Person

Date: Friday, January 25
Location: The Arden Theatre, St. Albert
Cast: Me & Dan (aka BFF)
The Why: Ben Sures IN CONCERT!

About a week or so before the show, I found out about the show thanks to an ad in the lovely Vue Weekly. I know Dan is a big fan of Ben Sures (thanks to the Irrelevant Show) and I am slowly becoming a fan (through ripping borrowed CDs from the library), and I thought it would be a real treat to go, so I ran it by him! Thankfully, he said yes so I called the Box Office - "your call is important to us, please stay on the line" - and picked up a couple of tickets.

There was another gentleman on the bill, and we joked that he "closed" for Ben, instead of what was obviously the case (Ben opened for him...semantics). We didn't enjoy Del Barber near as much. For one, he has no songs about magic ray guns, and revolutions in Bolivia. And also he wasn't as completely adorable and dorky as Mr. Sures. I mean, look at how cute he is! It isn't often that I can put my arm around the shoulder of a gentleman. And his glasses, well, you can guess how I feel about them.

Icing on Cake: Two days later he friend-requested me on Facebook with his personal account. And then messaged me to say it was nice meeting me at the concert! It was that skirt, I think....

Thanks for coming with me, BFF! And thanks for posing for a picture, even though I know how much you just hate that! (wink)
I can't wait for our next Arden Outing. If you wear your bow tie again I promise to wear my ridiculous skirt! Or perhaps that should be I promise not to wear it...hmmm (wink)

Currently...

Eating // Damn! I forgot to eat breakfast again!

Drinking // Coffee...damn predictable self.

Listening // Ben Sures' Gone to Bolivia (apparently, I just can't get enough...)

Enjoying // The above exchange between my brother & Ben Sures last night on Facebook! HA!

Laughing // Dude is home from school today (PD Day) and he keeps asking me if he can play another game on the iPad. And his voice is pretty much completely gone, so he has to walk over to me to do it. And squeak it out!

Loving // The fact that I CLEANED OFF THE TOP OF MY FRIDGE last night! That's a big deal people...I'm going to ride this cleaning wave into the future!

Looking forward to // Working tonight...so many of my favourite people will be there.

Thinking // I have a (pretty damn) wonderful life.

Today is feeling like it's going to be a PRODUCTIVE DAY! I have been so tired lately - my body really wants to succumb to this sick that's going around - but I am determined not to just laze around today. I'm finally in a place where I feel motivated and inspired to clean up and de-clutter and organize and create and all those good things! And I need to take advantage of that feeling and not devolve to my previous state of procrastinating ignorance.

Wish me luck!

Currently...sort of

the past couple of days...and today...3:27pm

Old movies...yet again. Creepy, western, and sci-fi. That's how I roll.

I also caught up on some recorded shows this week. What the?! It was nice to have a whole row of New Girl to watch the other night when I was feeling really crappy (snacking in front of the tv with my dislocated toe kind of crappy!)

Farmer's Market. Fresh. #nomnomnom

This morning I did some much needed yard work. I had a "helper", but he got cold/bored/tired and went inside. I am wearing "comfy" today, by Local Thrift Store.

This week has been very trying for me. And it was a short one too! Thank goodness.... Work was strange, to say the least, and much more stressful than usual. As a result, I needed a lot of down time at home. Just sitting, playing on the iPad, reading and hanging out with the boys. I feel now that my week is coming to a close that I cannot fault myself those unproductive nights. Or extra snacks.

It is my opinion that you can always turn a shitty week into a positive, and this week my turn around was my symphony date with the BFF last night! Wheee! It doesn't even matter what they're performed (Chopin, piano). I am so chuffed that I got to dress up, and hang out with BFF for a couple of hours.

Thank goodness for small favours.

Currently...Footloose & Fancy Free

9:40 am, dining room table

drinking: coffee coffee coffee
eating: crap, I forgot about my chia...
listening: the Footloose soundtrack on my record player
wanting: to scrapbook some more...lots lots more.
needing: to clean off the DR table!
thinking: "What am I afraid of?"
thankful for: awkward moments, hay bales, pen pals, pumpkins, blue prairie sky that goes on forever and ever
looking forward to: a future full of date nights

Can I just say that this album is one of the best soundtracks ever!? Ever people, ever. And look at Kevin Bacon's handsome tookus there. Have you tried out the new Google Bacon Number search feature? Just type in "Bacon Number" and the name of a star, and it will pop right up for you. John Wayne is a 2.

Also, carving stamps is my new favourite hobby. I was a busy girl this week! I finished a bunch of letters for a page I was working on, a new chevron pattern, an Xmas tree for BFF, and a couple of names for my girlfriends (with more on the way). It's super fun to design something, and then build it. And really spend time tweaking it and making it perfect. Quite satisfying actually. And I only cut myself twice!

I've got a bunch of TM blog work to finish today...oh my god...I just realized that today is the last day of September! Where on earth did that month go?! Anyhoo, a new month means a new month kit at TM, so I've got a bunch of posts to sort out for that. And I had another spectacular Saturday, with a little photo shoot. So there are all those pics to sort through. Also, this ass isn't going to get itself into shape...

My Kind of "Social Media"

These guys are on the brain and on the iPad this month. I just can't bring myself to listen to my old music - I am such a music snob - but I can't stand new movies. Go figure, eh?

Oh, and all this "don't blame the medium" nonsense I keep hearing from people about how it's not Facebook's fault that people act like idiots, and braggarts, and bastards on there. And how if it's really bothering you, you should just change your feed and unfriend people. Um...yeah. Or we could change Facebook for the better and not have all these ridiculous games, and contests, and find out where your friends are at all times and who they are friending and what companies they like kind of shat that Facebook has made it's bread and butter. And we could stop making excuses for Facebook - and for each other - and just be nicer, and smarter, and use more common sense damnit! Just sayin...

I'm a Folkie At Heart

I was lucky enough to score a pair of tickets to Folk Fest's Sunday show. Thank goodness for happy accidents! And I couldn't think of a better person to spend the day with than my BFF.
Edmonton skyline and some mad pretty clouds. Photo taken in the beer gardens.
It was so hot out all day. There was a huge line up at the water taps for bottle refilling. And loads of people trying to stake out whatever shade they could find. My hair promptly went all crazy and smushed to my head, but that's why I wear a hat!

BFF + Me. We like hats.

So, I am thinking more and more that Dan & I are the same person. He and I both suffer from indecision based on trying to be the diplomat. So there was a lot of this type of conversation going on during the day:

"Which stage do you want to check out?"

"It doesn't matter to me, whichever one you like."

"Well it doesn't matter to me either."

"Should we head over to Stage 5 or 4?"

"Either one. They both look good."

We both chose a crappy stage at one point and actually made a real decision to leave, followed by a blissful half hour spent in the beer gardens!
Main Stage - Evening Performance

Highlights of the Day:
1. "Who's Side Are You On?" Stage 5. Arrested Development, Emmanuel Jal, Rory Cochrane & Rodney Dowell. When I read the names of the artists at the stage, and saw how completely diverse they are, I thought it would be completely weird and not cohesive at all. But it was the best stage all day by far for Dan & I. Lots of energy. Lots of emotion and depth and I was just blown away! We both were, actually, and wished that we had headed over there sooner and caught the whole thing.
2. Meeting my newest nephew for the first time! Griffin is so adorable!
3. Running into Marilyn, who I haven't seen in a year or so, and who was sitting immediately behind our group's other tarp. Of course she was...
4. Dinner! Oh man. I wish I could remember the name of the Thai place, but it was stupidly awesome. Green curry, coconut rice, pad thai. I even convinced Dan to try it. Right...like that involved a lot of arm twisting!
5. Hanging out with Dan all day. Awww...

I didn't get near enough photos cause my battery was on the brink of death. But these will have to do.

Oh. And the memories. Can't forget those!

I am seriously considering volunteering at next year's Festival. Either that, or actually remembering to buy tickets before they are ridiculously ridiculously sold out! Y'know. In 6 minutes or so...

Also, best friend times are the best!

New Tunes

I laugh at myself all the time when I go to buy "new
music". And come out of my iTunes session with classic Billy Joel, Led Zeppelin and Cole Porter!

This time I had a nice half-and-half mix of old and new.

You can't beat Billy Joel, man. Moving Out? That's like the best song! That or Piano Man (not on this disc unfortunately...good karaoke memories of that one...)

And Beach House's latest album Bloom is quite awesome as well. Mellow, moving and sweet for summer loving.

Next up I'm thinking some Das Rascist is in order...

Out in the World

Here are some fun things that are happening out there in the world in the next little bit:

Total Lunar Eclipse on Saturday, December 10. Be up super early Saturday morning for a glimpse of the red, dog-bitten moon as it sets. In Edmonton we probably won't be able to see much past the full eclipse, but if you are tuning in from BC or Alaska, set your alarms! I'm going to try and get my arse out of bed to check it out. Anyone want to join me?? Or is that a no...

Total Lunar Eclipse 08-28-07. Credit: Conrad Jung

Look to the skies again on December 13, 14 and 15 as the Geminid meteor shower reaches its peak. Grab a blanket and head outside any time after 9pm. The moon will be bright those nights, so you won't see as many as you might in other years.

Locally, Metro Cinema has some great shows for us again this month, including Die Hard 2 showing on December 21st. And the Butterdome Craft Show is up and running this weekend. Super locally, TM is doing their Christmas Crop over the weekend, which means yours truly is putting in some time there.

I miss this blog I used to read, the edmontonian. They would always post a huge list of things going on around town. Now where am I supposed to get all my E-town news in one place!?!? Argh!

New Music: Thanks to Dan Destroyer for recommending the soundtrack for The Darjeeling Limited. I downloaded it before bed last night, and absolutely LOVE IT! Also, I was surprised by a song playing on the radio this morning. It seemed sort of out-of-character for the regular Sonic fare I hear on the way to work (or don't hear, cause I usually put it on XMU). Check out Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye. I am going to try and find it on the web to download later today.

Also, is it too ridiculous to buy myself a Christmas present? Just one. Maybe two. If I don't get a record player for Christmas I might just cry. Santa? I've been really good this year. Pretty please...

p.s. I have lots of post ideas for the next little bit. I'm trying to figure out what kinds of things I want to focus on in the next little bit, some different topics and some of the same. If you have any suggestions for things you would like to see, or would like for me to continue with, shout it all out!

how long have you been running?

Artist of the Month: Chad VanGaalen, and his album Diaper Island (which is a terrible name for an album, I know).

Fave songs: No Panic/No Heat, Burning Photographs, Do Not Fear

Sound: A mix between Fleet Foxes and surf rock, and stuff right from the 60s. It has this echoey beautiful, 'low-fi' sound to it, but is also so crisp and clever. It reminds me of Brokeback Mountain, but it's not country or cowboy or anything. Could just be that I was watching the movie (and reading the story) obsessively when I bought the album (more on that later), but I think it has this wide-open-spaces, lonely-blue-sky feel to it.

Found: I heard Burning Photographs on Sirius XMU (satellite radio) and risked a steep "distracted driving fine" to note it down.

If you like __________ you might like him: Bon Ivers, Fleet Foxes, Beirut

Bonus info: He's from Calgary, he's an illustrator...

sources: 1, 2, 3

Wait a second, for me lover, 'cause I'll be taking my sweet time.
Rolling softly across the meadow, dragging my broken pieces behind me.

Rain is falling so slow and mellow, washing this panic and heat from my skin.
Healing water come flood this valley, and carry our houses like ships to the sea.

How long have you been running, with feet made of stone?
How long have you been running, with feet made of stone?
-from No Panic/No Heat

I am quite enjoying this album, which is saying a lot since many of the complete albums I buy off iTunes are craptacular. That 30-second sound byte is just not enough to get a proper feel of things. I bought three albums within moments of each other this month - all good, all totally different - so I'll probably do a little write up about the others soon.

Music is top three on my wish list of life - coffee and books are the other two - so I feel strongly about being in love with bands, and obsessed with songs, and listening to one song over and over and over again on repeat before bed so I dream about melodies and layers and a perfect moment.

New Favourite...music to live to!

So last night (that's March 16, not sure when this is going to post) Russ and I were catching up on some SNL episodes. First and foremost, find Zach Galifinakis' monologue on the internet, pull on some adult diapers, and watch that bad boy! You will laugh and laugh and laugh. The adult diapers are for when you pee yourself after laughing so much.

Secondly, check out the Miley Cyrus episode, but not for Miley (although, she was surprisingly good). You want to "fast forward" to the musical guest. I will never type those words again, so heed my advice. the Strokes will blow your mind...I'm, just saying. If you like that sort of thing. For those of you who have been known to play a little Guitar Hero, you might recognize their song Reptilia. And there latest single is ah-ma-zing. And surprisingly, this is the one and only occurrence so far in my life where I don't have an immediate crush on the bass player. Hmmm. I will say, and I did say to Russel actually, that these guys must like the Ramones!

*****
Guilty pleasure music. A touchy subject. We all have some song or other on our iPods that we maybe wouldn't want to share with the cute guy down the street that we're trying to impress. Last night I found one of my catchy and embarassing Zumba songs online, promptly downloaded it, and have been listening to it ever since. It is the perfect song to listen to on a snowy morning drive when everybody else is driving like an idiot and getting into accidents that impede my commute. Normally the sailor vocabulary would come out in full force. But when Evacuate the Dance Floor is on, I find I don't care about those things. It was a smooth drive, and I think I listened to the song a couple dozen times this morning, and I'm still smiling! Go Cascada!

Apparently, this song is unembeddable, c/o You Tube...thanks dudes. So you'll just have to take one more step and click on the link yourself: here is the video.

*****
On another note: I find it so fascinating when you are given a glimpse into how others see you. I find that I get a lot of compliments (I guess you could call them that) about my person. My (crazy) hair, my (crazy) glasses, my (crazy) clothes. The other night my Zumba instructor told me that she could tell I wasn't a shy person because of the way I dress and the way I do my hair. I am beginning to wonder if I am breaking down some sort of social barrier between people and expressing their true feelings (about my hair). Does this happen to everyone? Or is it just me and my (crazy) hair?

*****
Also, isn't Major Tom by Peter Schilling the coolest song?

*****
Also, I have been thinking about doing another Vlog (that's video blog), but I am not sure what I want to talk about specifically. I always have lots (and lots) to talk about, but I thought I would get your opinions/suggestions. Anything you want to hear me talk about?? Let me know here...

Video Monday - New Favourite

This is my new favourite band. I bought their album on iTunes last month and have been listening to it on repeat ever since.

Crash Kings...self-titled
"You got me" is going to be making an appearance in a thing I'm working on that I've already written a post for that is yet to be published...my life is so complicated!
I am going to go ahead and categorize this band as "Broadway Rock". It's got this big piano sound, with larger than life vocals and lots of layers (like Broadway). But it's also got great guitar and drums and it just makes you want to shake your head and stomp your feet (like Rock). Also, this is the stuff you sing at the top of your lungs in your car, while banging the steering wheel as your drum kit, and tapping the brakes in time to the beat. It's my new favourite made-up genre of music.

It reminds me a little of old school Ben Folds (btw, I do not enjoy his latest song...boo). And it's still so hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that this is a three-piece band! Wow!

So enjoy, and stay tuned for more More MORE!

lay my head at the foot of your love

this is one of those songs that might have very minimal lyrics, but they leave a big mark.

this is one of those songs that I hear on the radio and then think: "man, I need to have that song". And then I turn on my iPod and it starts to play. Awesome.

Monday is for Other Dimensions

Sonic has been playing this one on the radio more frequently it seems. No complaints here! It takes me back to "the good old days"...High School...HA!

Gee Gosh Oh My

Lucas, Russel and I went to the awesome new boulder and splash parks in Mill Woods last night. Lucas was reluctant to get in the water at first, but then he was happy to get wet. The water runs from 9 to 9. We left around 7:45...right before the rain came! Lucas was shivering, but he had a good time.

And I got nothing at all done last night. Nothing. Not even the pile of playschool stuff I was supposed to be working on. Didn't even touch it. But I did watch two excellent episodes of two of my fave sci-fi shows. That counts as being productive right!?!? HA! Stargate Series finale (from 3 years ago...I'm a little behind), and a really cool Doctor Who episode. I am thinking about dressing up as the David Tennant-Doctor Who for Halloween.

I've got the crazy hair, so all I'll really need is a three-piece suit and trench, white converse sneakers, a sonic screwdriver, psychic papers and a Brittish/Scottish accent. shouldn't be too hard...eh?

*****
Yesterday I failed to mention that I ripped a hole in the front of my skirt, and killed my phone thanks to the construction in our office. Yay me.
*****
What else?...I think I need a donut. Too bad that doesn't have anything to do with anything!

My "Something Most Lovely" Class is running on Saturday. For more details, click here. i am really looking forward to it...two really awesome ladies are signed up so far! We'll see if I can get my act together by the weekend and have things run without too many issues! HA!

Can you believe that people are starting to look forward to fall? Summer is so short, and so not done, and yet there are lots of bloggers out there talking about boots, and sweaters, and pumpkin spice lattes with no discretion! I'm trying to pack as many summer activities into these last couple of weeks before school starts!

But I must admit that there is something about the heat of a fall day. Hot sun on your face, with a cool breeze in your hair (if you have any, which I don't) or on your face. That smell, that fall smell. The leaves turning. Yum. The other day Russ and I saw one branch on a poplar tree whose leaves were all a bright golden yellow. The rest of the tree as green as can be!

*****
Twisted Sketches Layout...I should post that or something!

*****
And I can't believe I haven't posted this picture yet!! me and Garner and the Sonic Bunny after my epic Van-Man failure! Check out my big $5 bill...ooh baby!

Heard a fabulous new song on the radio by a fabulous old school band! Devo is back people!!

Skip David by zooming ahead about 20seconds. I'm hoping this video comes out okay. I disconnected the speakers at work and don't feel like reconnecting them today.
