Twisted Sketches DT - Final Sketch for Me...

This is my final sketch as a member of the Twisted Sketches DT. It has been an amazing ride, and I have had so much fun with Anam's sketches. But it's time for me to say goodbye...

The twist this week is "FRESH"...
 Supply list:
Pattern paper is Studio Calico (Elementary)
Letters are Studio Calico (wooden "A"), Doodlebug (blue) and American Crafts (green)
Clock rub on is Studio Calico
Brads are Creative Imaginations (and they're fuzzy)
Bling is Doodlebug
Butterfly punch is Martha
Label sticker is 7Gypsies
Black splatters are made with alcohol ink, and the gold splatters are made with acrylic paint, watered down a bit.
Random bits: blue fabric from my stash, a door cut off my Lime Door business cards, the butterflies are punched from a foil envelope, ledger paper, and stitching with my sewing machine.
Special Techniques:
None really. Just your standard Lisa-fare!
I took this photo on New Year's Eve. The journaling reads:
"my new year's motto: Make It, Mend It, Earn It, Sustain It...repeat as necessary!"

Check out the main Twisted Sketches blog for the sketch and to see the other layouts. And to say "see ya" to all the ladies leaving the team. I'm sure Anam has picked some great artists to fill in the blanks and I can't wait to see what the New Year holds for her!!

Twisted Sketches DT

This week's theme was "white"...and can you believe there is only one sketch left until my term is up...I'm going to miss this!
J
This picture was taken of most handsome Jacob back in November (I think).
Supplies List
Patterned paper is old (old) Chatterbox! Remember them?
Stickers are from Sassafraslass
Brads are from American Crafts, My Mind's Eye and Making Memories.
That fabulous wood letter is from Studio Calico
Ribbons are random ones from my stash, so I have no idea which manufacturer (good bet is Webster's Pages)
That white stuff is a Studio Calico spray ink...I lurve this stuff!
Special Techniques
To make the swirly paper behind the photo I first cut out a random circle from my patterned paper. Then I started cutting a spiral shape, starting on the outside and cutting row upon row until I reached the middle. I spread the paper out and stapled it in place on my paper. In areas where it bulged, I just cut the offending piece so it would lay relatively flat.

Check out the main Sketches Blog for the original sketch, and some other takes on it!

Twisted Sketches DT - it's time...

time is simultaneous
funny story. I must have subconsciously remembered the "twist" of the sketch while I was working on it, because it made it on there without any actual thought about it!

I was flipping through my Watchmen novel for some inspiration, and I happened to read the passage where the blue guy and his girl friend are chatting on Mars. And the thing he said was awesome! And I wanted it for my title right away.

"time is simultaneous. an intricately structured jewel...the whole design visible in every facet"

at the last minute, after I had finished the layout, I checked my sheet to see what the twist was, because I totally forgot to incorporate it! Ack!! well...lucky me...
Supplies list
Ribbon is May Arts and Webster's Pages? Maybe. I stitched it on with my sewing machine.
Button is Jenni Bowlin
Sticker letters are Studio Calico
Tag is from a super cool store in Portland called Cargo. It's a vintage-inspired luggage tag.
The ticket is from Nadine, the red paint is spray paint, and the thread is from my sewing machine (IKEA-cheap)

The luggage tag opens to reveal a nice space for some journaling. But the words just won't come. I think the title says it all.
Special Techniques
This layout started as a scrap piece of paper, and evolved from there.
I was spray painting a stencil on another project, and had lots of paint left on the stencil (cause my paint can is giving me a hard time!). So I flipped it paint side down and started pressing it all over a sheet of kraft cardstock I had laying around. You can sort of see the negative image of the stencil in the picture below. I ran it over the edges as well, then let it dry.
I also wanted to get a little practice in with my sewing machine, so I started randomly turning the page and let it take on a life of its own.
Then when it came time to do the sketch, I already had a background started for me, and built the layout around it.
Photos taken in the photo booth at the Ace Hotel in Portland, Oregon.
September 25, 2010.
Lucas is 5 and Lisa is 30 and two days.

check out the main Twisted Sketches blog for the original sketch and to see what the other ladies did with. I think you will be pleasantly surprised!

Twisted Sketches DT

Merry Christmas...and a Layout!
The Sketch went live today, and I noticed it, so I can post my layout early...well...early for me!

Twist this week is "Celebrate"...how fitting!
Supplies List
Pattern paper is Studio Calico (woodgrain), Cosmo Cricket (polaroid and caption), Hambly (hearts, text and cupcakes), Sassafraslass (border). I also used a Hambly transparency (the cutlery)
Brads are We Are Memory Keepers (sparkle!), old Stampin Up, and I think that's it!?
Letters are Jenni Bowlin (little) and Studio Calico (wooden)
The star sticker is Jenni Bowlin
Special Techniques
Not much to say here...I did stitch the larger piece of pattern paper to the layout. That's something. I also stitched along the paper strips at the bottom using a zig zag stitch. It's hard to see in the photos because of the thread colour, but it's there!
*****

And the icing on the cake this week (HA!)...I did a second page! GASP!
I used the same sketch, and the same twist, and the photos are from the same event. I never do double page layouts, but I wanted to show off all these great photos, and Anam's sketch really inspired me this week!
Supplies List
Pattern paper is old old old: KI Memories (stripe), Chatterbox (plaid), Basic Grey (blue) and My Mind's Eye (maybe...orange with brown polka dots). I also used another Polaroid and caption from Cosmo Cricket.
Cutlery rub ons are from Hambly.
Stickers are Jenni Bowlin (star), October Afternoon (circle label), 7Gypsies (little labels).
Little numbers and letters are Jenni Bowlin, and the wooden letters are Studio Calico ("RK" are my husband's initials)
Brads are My Mind's Eye (large lion), We R Memory Keepers (small sparkle)
Ribbon is...I'm not sure...I buy a lot of ribbon!
Special Techniques
I stitched all over the place again, outlining the entire page and the photos with the same colour thread as on the first layout.
I used the little sticker letters and labels for my title, but I also used them to camouflage a distracting part of the photo. That wall in my house is busy-busy with things, and it was impossible to crop out without losing the cake. So I strategically placed my photos on the layout so I could cover that corner with my title! Easy-peasy!

thanks for stopping by...don't forget to go say HI to the other ladies on this most-fabulous of Design Teams!
And check the Twisted Sketches site for the original sketch...Anam never fails to disappoint!!

Twisted Sketches DT

Time for another Sketch and Layout. Yippee!

The "twist" this week is WRITE, so I wrote Lucas a little note.
Supplies Used
Patterned paper is Anna Griffin (the brown, I think), and Cosmo Cricket (the cassettes, one of my all-time favourite paper lines!). The words also come from the same Cosmo Cricket line (a border paper)
Chipboard gears are Riff Raff Design
Note cards are Jenni Bowlin (they are the bigger ones that come in coloured packs and I cut them down to size)
The big brad is from My Mind's Eye and the little ones are old Stampin Up!
Spray inks are Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist (orange and turquoise, sorry I don't have the actual names of these guys) and Studio Calico (white)

Special Techniques
To create the fabulous background, I used an old set of KI Memories die cut letters, but first I punched out all the letters from the sheet and put them away! The leftover "packaging" makes a great mask!
I'm not sure what I did to the gears...lots of paint (black and teal) and that might just be it!

Go say hi to the ladies over at the main Twisted Sketches Blog, leave them some love (me too!), and check out the original sketch!

I'm going to take a couple more pictures of some of the details, and post them as well...maybe...
I am teaching a class tonight (yay!), but otherwise haven't done a lot of scrapbooking lately. boo. I am doing a little (teensy) December Daily to document all of Lucas' Calendar gifts. And so far so good! Maybe I'll post some shots of that as well...until then...

Twisted Sketches DT

Another fun and fabulous Twisted Sketch went live yesterday...I don`t know how Anam keeps coming up with such fun sketches!!

The twist this time is family...
Supplies list:
Woodgrain pattern paper is new Crate Paper. Background paper is some random sheet of paper that was left in my cubby at work...those girls know what I like!
I`ve got a Jenni Bowlin label sticker in there, as well as some stickers from the latest Sassafras Lass line designed by Michelle Clements.
The `Good`transparency is from Teresa Collins.
The rub on up the side of the photo is an old (old) Basic Grey that was pretty much falling apart as I tried to put it on! And the other two are also Basic Grey...maybe...i can`t remember!
The big sticker letters are all American Crafts (felt and foam) and the little guys are My Little Shoebox.
The big green button is Jenni Bowlin and the little one is from my stash.
The cassette tape doodle is from an old Elsie Flannigan-Red Velvet Art kit. (no longer available)
Techniques...are sort of simple, but well worth the little time it takes!
1. Stitching. I like doing little Xs because they look so classic. Take your needle and punch your holes first. You can eyeball the placement. Then grab some embroidery floss in a fun colour and go to town! The new Sassafras Lass stuff is covered with embroidery and stitching, I just couldn`t resist adding it to my layout.
2. Colouring. having a young one in the house, I pick up a colouring book or crayon at least once a day!  For this layout I thought the rub on needed a little something more, so I grabbed a pencil and gently shaded around the edges. You could add some colour to a rub on using this technique as well.
About the title: `Good Mix Tape`
My step-dad`s last name is Good. My Mom`s is as well, but she has had many different last names. Amy and I were never Goods, but our names are different than they were before we got married, and added some extra boys to the family! We are the `Mix Tape`, which just refers to all the different personalities and names and families coming together on one awesome soundtrack!!

That`s it peeps. As per usual, check out the main Twisted Sketches blog for all the layouts as well as the original sketch. I could keep doing this forever...I`m going to be sad when my time is up on this DT!

Twisted Sketches DT

Here is my latest Twisted Sketch layout...it went live on the site yesterday.

The twist is circles...
Supplies list:
Pattern paper is Crate Paper, Sassafras Lass, Girls` Paperie and Kaiser Craft. The background paper is an old safety certificate of my mom`s I found in a frame at home
Leaves and flowers are Prima
Chipboard hearts are Buzz and Bloom and the lady is Riff raff
Sticker letters are American Crafts and Jenni Bowlin
Word and label stickers are Crate Paper, Heidi Swapp, Jenni Bowlin with a Sassafras Lass border
Whale brad is from a newer Cosmo Cricket line
There aren`t really any special techniques at work here. I always recommend you look for supplies where you wouldn`t normally look...like using some non-scrapbooking paper as a fun background or accent. It`s probably not acid or lignin free, but I`m not worried about that. The hearts were inked, then covered in Glossy Accents.
I lurve layering embellishments like this. By framing the photo with everything, the fact that I used a heck of a lot of stuff isn`t so noticeable.
thanks for stopping by...and don`t forget to head back to the Twisted Sketches main site for the original sketch and to see all the other layouts.

Twisted Sketches

The sketch this week was another great one...that I turned on it's side. That just seems to work better for me and my little layouts!
Oak Park - Twisted Sketches #73
The twist is "Black"
Supplies used:
- pattern paper is new Kaiser Craft
- Ribbon is unknown and the ruler tape is Tim Holtz
-Brads are from Making Memories (canvas) and American Crafts (black rhinestones)
- Alpha stickers are Doodlebug
- Rub ons are Basic Grey (from their new travel line), Hambly (silver lace), old KI Memories (Love Elsie, Xmas line) and Rouge de Garance (those black lines)
- Tickets are Jenni Bowlin (star) and Tim Holtz ("live")
- the shiny gold tape is Tim Holtz metal tape
- and the word stickers are from the new Cosmo Cricket line which I am totally in love with!
Other:
- vintage bingo marker
- black thread from IKEA
- shiny stars
- label from DMC embroidery floss
A technique you might be interested in:
Instead of using paper to make the blocked background, I used my sewing machine to stitch a rectangle on the background paper. I wanted to be able to see the text come through, but I also wanted to mark off that area. You could also achieve the same result with watered down paint or ink, vellum or a transparency.
Check out all the other interpretations here. And leave the ladies some love!

These are some photos from our Portland trip...I love carnival rides at night! We had a lot of fun here. During the walk back to the bus stop, Lucas kept complaining that we took away all his fun, and he was really mad at us!

Twisted Sketches

The Sketch this week is so awesome! And the twist is "hole"...there are a lot of possibilities there!

Journaling reads:
September 23rd, 2010.
I celebrated my birthday with a beer and brisket at this tiny restaurant in Portland.
I have a new appreciation for the term
hole in the wall
Supply List
- Pattern paper is Sassafras (not sure which line, some old some newer)
- Rub ons are Hambly (lace and chandelier), My Mind's Eye (coloured numbers), 7Gypsies, Stampin' Up, and unknown (that white mess stuff)
- Brads are new My Mind's Eye (dinosaur...ha ha) and Creative Cafe by Creative Imaginations
- Letter stickers are my new favourite wood grain from Hambly...they are awesome! And Jenni Bowlin (also awesome!)
- I also used an old VHS label sticker and some lime green Dotto Mesh
Here's a fun technique you might be interested in...
Try layering your rub ons! The grouping at the top of the photo (pictured above) are all different rub ons from different packages (and companies). By layering them together, not only do they look like they were made that way originally, they make a much larger impact then if they were left on their own.

The coloured numbers below the photo came in the package like that, but this look would be easy enough to replicate using individual rub ons or sticker letters.

Rub ons are my new favourite embellishment!

Sketch to close out September

Last day of the month...my birthday month...well, there will be time for reminiscing later!

For now, a layout!

Here is my take on Twisted Sketches #69: "flower"
I turned the sketch on its side and went from there. The photo is from Lucas' birthday...these are the fabulous tasting, but not much to look at cupcakes I made!!

Here's a technique you might be interested in:
The three "flowers" are made from 7Gypsies and Heidi Swapp tape. I cut a strip, twisted it around on itself, then stuck a brad through the centre. Then I took some thin, coloured wire and twisted it around to make the swirls, and looped it around the brads a couple of times for good measure. The entire piece is secured to the layout with a couple of stitches here and there with some fabulous turquoise embroidery floss.

Supplies list:
- Pattern paper is KandCo, Cosmo Cricket and SEI, with a Hambly transparency thrown in for good measure.
- Brads from Pebbles and I have no idea who made the wooden one
- Tape is 7Gypsies (red) and Heidi Swapp (brown)
- Letter stickers are My Little Showbox and Jenni Bowlin
- Star sticker is also Jenni Bowlin, from her little coloured notepads
- I splattered the background with three different kinds of ink. The brown is watered down Ranger Distress Re-inkers (in walnut stain). The purple is Ranger Colour Wash (in eggplant) and the red is Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist (in Starfish)

Twisted Sketches and Happy Birthday!

Sketch #67 is up! Check it out...

Here is my version of "BUTTON"

Supplies list:
Pattern paper is Basic Grey (the background), Melissa Frances, a tiny snippet of October Afternoon, and some old divider that my buddy Juli snagged from work ages ago for me to use...my friends know me so well!
Chipboard is Riff Raff Designs
Buttons are random ones from my stash, and an old Love Elsie (KI Memories) chipboard one
Letters are My Little Shoebox and hand-cut ones from some wood grain contact paper
Flowers are a digital/hybrid element from Kitschy Digitals that I printed and cut out
All the inking is done with watered down Distress Re-Inkers from Ranger (this is Walnut Stain). I also "painted" the chipboard with the same ink
Other stuff used: thread and my sewing machine and embroidery floss

*****

Happy Birthday Brother! I always manage to feel very old when my youngest brother has a birthday...and it doesn't help that mine is a week away! I know he'll have a great day...and weekend!

Twisted Sketches Update-o-rama

the latest Twisted Sketch went live yesterday! Check out the site for the original sketch, and all the other interpretations!

Here is my version of "METAL"
I stitched the yarn on with my sewing machine, and hand-stitched the bits holding the washer on.
Supplies list:
Pattern paper is from October Afternoon, and the background is a writing practice sheet Russ made for Lucas (that he never used!). The house drawing I grabbed off the internet (google image search for houses)
Transparency and Rub on are Hambly.
Letter stickers are Jenni Bowlin, October Afternoon and My Little Shoebox
Brad is Pebbles
Other stuff used: an old key and washer I found (like, on the ground), yarn, thread, embroidery floss, black pen

*****
I really loved all the pictures I took of what's left of main street Heinsburg...I feel at least a couple more layouts coming!

And, I really love being on a DT for a SKETCHES blog...never thought I'd say that! It's such a great challenge for me...and I'm enjoying it!

Friday, August 20, 2010

finally friday

the rest of the Birthday-Day went very well! and if all goes according to plan this afternoon, I will have some cupcakes made and an album finished...and some photos of both to share with you!

*****
in the meantime...check out my latest sketch on the Twisted Sketches blog. I keep forgetting it gets released on Wednesdays! I need to make myself a little TS calendar that I keep handy at all times...hey, that's not a bad idea! Yay...a new project!

Anyhoo...here is my layout for this week's twist: FOLD
I like how not only is the paper folded on the layout, but a map is also something you fold and that most people find difficult to fold...the twist took on a separate meaning for me this time!
supplies:
Pattern paper by Bam Pop and Studio Calico
Rhinestone brad is Creative Imaginations
Making Memories word stickers (last year's Halloween line)
Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist in Dreamsicle and maybe Starfish
Letter Mask is leftovers from old Heidi Swapp chipboard
Self-doodled frame (using Sakura Glaze pen on sticker paper)
Pen...not sure, something black and handy!

Head on over to the blog for the sketch and play along. All of the layouts are great this week! Give the ladies some loving...

*****
Lucas had a major freak out at camp this morning. He told me he hated camp, and wanted to go home. I left him there, for his own good, but a little bit of me died.

On a personal note, I have decided to stop posting on the TNT blog. And I would rather not talk about it...

Gee Gosh Oh My

Lucas, Russel and I went to the awesome new boulder and splash parks in Mill Woods last night. Lucas was reluctant to get in the water at first, but then he was happy to get wet. The water runs from 9 to 9. We left around 7:45...right before the rain came! Lucas was shivering, but he had a good time.

And I got nothing at all done last night. Nothing. Not even the pile of playschool stuff I was supposed to be working on. Didn't even touch it. But I did watch two excellent episodes of two of my fave sci-fi shows. That counts as being productive right!?!? HA! Stargate Series finale (from 3 years ago...I'm a little behind), and a really cool Doctor Who episode. I am thinking about dressing up as the David Tennant-Doctor Who for Halloween.

I've got the crazy hair, so all I'll really need is a three-piece suit and trench, white converse sneakers, a sonic screwdriver, psychic papers and a Brittish/Scottish accent. shouldn't be too hard...eh?

*****
Yesterday I failed to mention that I ripped a hole in the front of my skirt, and killed my phone thanks to the construction in our office. Yay me.
*****
What else?...I think I need a donut. Too bad that doesn't have anything to do with anything!

My "Something Most Lovely" Class is running on Saturday. For more details, click here. i am really looking forward to it...two really awesome ladies are signed up so far! We'll see if I can get my act together by the weekend and have things run without too many issues! HA!

*****
Can you believe that people are starting to look forward to fall? Summer is so short, and so not done, and yet there are lots of bloggers out there talking about boots, and sweaters, and pumpkin spice lattes with no discretion! I'm trying to pack as many summer activities into these last couple of weeks before school starts!

But I must admit that there is something about the heat of a fall day. Hot sun on your face, with a cool breeze in your hair (if you have any, which I don't) or on your face. That smell, that fall smell. The leaves turning. Yum. The other day Russ and I saw one branch on a poplar tree whose leaves were all a bright golden yellow. The rest of the tree as green as can be!

*****
Twisted Sketches Layout...I should post that or something!

*****
And I can't believe I haven't posted this picture yet!! me and Garner and the Sonic Bunny after my epic Van-Man failure! Check out my big $5 bill...ooh baby!

*****

Heard a fabulous new song on the radio by a fabulous old school band! Devo is back people!!

Skip David by zooming ahead about 20seconds. I'm hoping this video comes out okay. I disconnected the speakers at work and don't feel like reconnecting them today.
I think it's a good song. But pretty much anything that reminds me of the 80s is awesome in my books.

*****
and speaking of the 80s...
Happy National Duran Duran Appreciation Day!!
