"i am e robot"

The other day I had Lucas walking around saying this, in a very robot voice! And I say "alrighty Aphrodite" all the time, and he just caught on! So when I was asking him about his lunch today (he went out with Poppa, Auntie & Grandpa) he said "I said alrighty Aphrodite there".

Finished some pages and projects today. I have really been feeling creative, but the in-between-clean mess downstairs is bringing me down. Every time I go down there I just sit and stare and nothing happens. NOTHING! It's kind of freaking me out! I need a day to just finish all the cleaning and organizing, with no interruptions, and then I think I will feel better. On a positive note, I love my Clip-it Up top and I wonder why I didn't get it sooner!

My class today at TM went really well...both of my students shapes turned out really nice! And mine's not too shabby either!

I used one of my new toys...some stencils. I have been craving black spray paint, so I bought these letter/number stencils at Colours. They work really well with regular paint too!

A random layout for the store, because I think we need more diversity...and the Hambly was calling my name. "Lisa...Lisa...you know you want me...feel the love...cut the paper..." I took a whole bunch of pictures (and I mean a whole bunch) in front of the sliding doors in my house recently. So you can expect a whole bunch of layouts and projects and canvases and mini albums with said pictures on them to be gracing the pages of this blog in the coming weeks! If I'm having a good hair day or a good face day I always whip out the camera and take a bunch of shots! Savour the moment.
Note: I really like the Heidi Swapp mirrors, but usually have a hard time using them...I think the big guy works really well here. Mini Challenge: use a mirror or something reflective on a layout about yourself.
Another random layout. It needs a title, but I think I like it just as it is. (Note: the title I had in mind is: "unofficial TM Mascot")

Another random mixed media canvas thing...I used some of the new Art Chix, the new Riff Raff tree and (old) little house. The background is my latest accident technique: I smooshed gesso all over the canvas, then sprayed glimmer mist all over it. But I sprayed too much, and it pooled, and it was horrible, and I tried to blot it off with some paper towel and then it was beautiful!

I am also very proud of the words I used on the canvas. I got a thank-you-for-your-service letter from Primerica and all of the words on the canvas came from that letter! Triumph! It has a little extra meaning that way! It reads: "with any Dawn comes renewal. Don't let this opportunity disappear."

I got some more Riff Raff pages done for the March release...sorry you can't see those yet! And I am having so much fun with the shapes...and I didn't think I would! I have a couple more ideas that I'm excited to try out.

Hello to my Farmer's Market buddies...and sorry we missed you Juli...
P.S. If any of my readers ever have questions about a technique or a product I used on any of my layouts or project please ask me what's what and who's who!! You can leave a comment below and I'll get back to you asap! I don't write all the nitty gritty details about my stuff every time I post because it gets to be a long post! But I don't mind sharing my artistic gains with the world...

Flickr...

Truth be told, since my last Flickr upload debacle I haven't really been going there. Aside from the couple of times I was looking for wedding decor ideas...and then realizing there is some ugly stuff out there. "U-G-L-Y, you ain't got no alibi...you ugly, yeah yeah, you ugly."

But so many cool and creative people look to Flickr everyday for some inspiration and some pretty eye candy! I am bowing to peer pressure and searching for "umbrellas" (the first thing that popped into my head...???could be because I would so love to do a silly photo shoot with my Keropi umbrella)

And mostly since I'm a goober and because I'm at work...im not precisely sure how to share my Flickr finds with you. So you'll just to find some pics for yourself!

Possible search topics:
- black nail polish (maybe not? lots of scary toe pictures...)
- no way (please ignore all the wrestling pics)
- listening
- speechless
- ladylike
- song lyrics
- paisley (check out artist Lisa Dean's Intricacies series!)

All for now. will be leaving work soon...am very slacker today and did no actual work...oops! have a long to-do list for later. my class has people in it tomorrow, so now I am starting to freak. FREAK!

im good enough smart enough and gosh darnit people like me.

have been noticing spelling mistakes within my own stuff. yikes. must be vigilant.

want to buy comic books and graphic novels.

want not to spill coffee all over myself every time I wear this shirt. (p.s. i just spelled over like this: "evor" yikes!)

want to try something semi-cool i saw on kids tv. for those of you at home during the day, check out Treehouse's Mr. Maker (on 2pm-ish?). This fab british(?) fellow who makes crafts out of every day things. Bonus: he has doodle drawers and his accent makes everything sound funny: "washing up liquid"! Awesome! Plus he makes some cool crafts. Simple...but cool. Just my style. Now if only Lucas was into making stuff...other than making a mess, or making me crazy, or making a scene.

later,

more carbon talk

the Mini-Fam and I will be generating about 3.5 tonnes of carbon when we fly to and from Dallas (that's with high-altitude carbon factored in, 1.7 when it's not). That's a lot of carbon.

And depending on which offset website I check out, the amount of moola and greenbacks it's going to cost me vary greatly! And some offset companies are "better" than others (more transparent business practices, more projects, more $ going to projects, etc.) There are comparison sites out there to help you decide. I think I picked my company, but I'm going to keep looking in case I find something better! One thing I have a problem with though, there don't seem to be any LOCAL projects happening...why can't I buy offsets that stay in the country instead of going to Brazil or India?

Why I Love David

Suzuki that is. He makes it so easy to be green!

I pretty much answered my own "carbon offset" question by going to his website!

Check it out...Carbon Neutral

Mini Note: Don't plant trees for carbon offsetting...boo...hiss

Apparently...

this store rocks!

I have found a super cool Scrapbooking/Photo Studio store in the Big Apple (aka NYC, aka New York City)

Portrait Bug is everything a cool scrapbooking store should be...not that we're not cool!! But they're pretty cool too! Plus they carry Riff Raff and Kristina Contes and Nathalie Kalbach are on their DT!

Plus their website has given me a tonne of ideas to try at TM...some of these ideas I have already thought of, but these guys reminded me how cool they are and showed me that they just might work!

P.S. my old school Scrap Girls...they have a photo studio right in the store...remind you of anything...perhaps a cool store idea we had not so long ago...

Also, I have been unable to find a local art retreat...so instead of complain I have decided to do something about it. More details to come...

Two weeks to go until we leave for Dallas. I really need to start planning my packing. And my shopping. I am so going to bring a list of all the stores and things I need to check out. For example, the Container Store, Target, Pottery Barn, Steve Madden and anywhere else that sells nice shoes are on the top of the list! OH MY GOD the Container Store sells bins made out of old newspapers!!! I guess I will have to bring that extra suitcase afterall...

Also, anyone know any good carbon-offsetting programs I can look into? Online Research here I come!

To answer some questions...

My last post generated a lot of comments (4...yay me!) And there were some questions among them.

1. To Paula - I don't think I'm going to have a lot of stuff to get rid of, but I'll keep the Stollery in mind! Also, I'm not going to try out for the ScrapMojo design team - it's just not my cup of tea! To be on a DT that is...too many deadlines and rules and stuff you have to do...I already have enough on my to-do lists!!

2. To Laurie - I can't speak for everyone, but I know most people like freebies! I like to either give my stuff away to the first person who calls dibbs, OR give it to charity. I was also making little challenge kits for my blog for awhile...check out my archives from winter 2007/2008 and you'll see what I mean. Another good idea, if you and some friends are up for it, is to hold a "Garage Sale/Craft Sale" I joined some friends who were doing it a couple of years ago and it went really well.

And thanks Paula for the photo-compliment. I think this was a bit of an accident! It's the last of a whole bunch of pics I took of him here and when I went to print them, I didn't realize the default had been changed to grayscale & there you have it! Lucas really likes the picture because he can see his kitty in it!

I'm done now because typing on my ipod is making me loonie

ScrapMojo Challenge

"I'm back in the saddle again..."

I haven't done a Challenge blog for ages! But I had the perfect picture and some new paper...

This page is super simple for me...super...simple...but I love it! And Lucas likes it too (mostly because it has a picture of kitty on it!)

Check out the Challenge here...Got Mojo?

P.S. My organizing is going really well! I am emptying bags that have been sitting in front of my desk for ages! It's quite wonderful. Now I just need to tackle all my paper...into the depths of Mordor I go! If only I had some sort of ring of power...one ring to bind them all...

it is very late

soon i think i will start to see the future.

wasn't it just midnight a moment ago?

inspired is such a small word for what i am feeling right now. my skin is alive and my hands are moving and my mind is moving.

but it is too beyond late. and i don't think i can handle lucas on minimal sleep tomorrow. no amount of fair trade coffee in the world can handle it.

such is life. life is life.

so many good ideas for canvases it blows my mind.

CHANTEL my dear, you are a mad genius sometimes and i am so on board!

one last thing...

"you know the one. it goes 'do-do-do-do cow bell do-do-da-do cow bell"

why isn't tomorrow saturday?

i'm glad tomorrow isn't saturday.

Anybody want a...

iPod holder/cell phone holder/cool little felt pocket thingy...?

I made this for my ipod Touch, but it's a little bit too big. So I'm headed back to the drawing board, but I don't want to waste my "guinea pigs" so-to-speak. It measures about 3 inches by 4 inches (closed). It's made from brown felt, stitched together with embroidery floss. The top flap folds down and is held in place by a felt strip. There is no extra padding inside. The colours are much more vibrant than the picture shows. Anybody who wants it can have it...just leave a comment here.

So in reading the IKEA catalogue everyday for the past three days, I have started thinking about sideboards again. I just haven't been able to find anything vintage that makes me happy. I want something that will take up the whole wall, and not cost me a fortune! And that's where IKEA comes in! I hate to buy something new, but I really need something for that wall...and yesterday I was sure I had it! The Besta system is pretty cool, and comes in a bunch of colours with a bunch of door options. It wasn't perfect (the height was off, and the doors really big), but it was the best price and the best option I've found so far.

So Russ & I went on a fact-finding mission last night. He wasn't 100% keen on it, so he kept wandering around while I watched Lucas. And then he found it...as if by magic! Something not in the catalogue. Something I totally walked right past the other day. Something from a line I have been in love with ever since I started shopping at IKEA.

Expedit. They have this new little Expedit storage cube. And it is perfect! I can put legs on it, and get doors if I want or just use baskets. At only $60 per unit, my three unit requirement won't break the bank. In fact, it comes in hundreds of dollars lower than my cheapest option before! I am beyond excited! My long and painful search is over. And I promise no mind-changing and no second-guessing. This is it!

I also think I'm closer to figuring out what to do with my fireplace...a little paint and a couple of rad chairs...boo yah! It's going to take forever, but it will be worth it when it's all done!

I also put my DIY skills to use yesterday and installed a cute little bucket shelf thing over top of Lucas' table in the living room. It's meant for storing cutlery, but it works just as well for all his crayons and paintbrushes. Hopefully this will help him put his own toys away.

P.S. If any of you girls reading this have never used a power drill, you're missing out!

Here is the quote book I made on Saturday. KC made this perler (sp?) bead album for me ages ago, and I never had quite the right idea for it. So I grabbed all my brown and green embellishments and took them to work, and went to work! All the quotes I grabbed from Kelly Rae Roberts book that Naomi lent me (I'm almost done girl...just going to photocopy some of the pages at work on Friday and then you can have it back!)

Sorry the pics are different sizes...I started uploading them big, then I realized how many pics there are, so I changed to a smaller size. All of the backgrounds are pretty much just me making a mess with coloured ink, practically empty Glimmer Mist bottles (really forces you to get creative just getting the stuff out!) and paint.

Check you later...and thanks for looking. I had lots of fun making this...plus I used some supplies that had been gathering dust on my desk! Check back later in the week (or next week) for some freebies...I bought the top piece for my Clip-It-Up and am planning some major reorganizing of my scrapping space. I might also use this as an excuse to get back into the kit-making enterprise! Woot!

Later,

P.S. I deleted the final page of the album by accident...but you get the idea!

Sometimes the Internet is Stupid

So I was reading this cool magazine of Heather's last night called Ready Made and I went to check out their website and see if I could subscribe and for how much. Well, apparently if you are Canadian you can't sign up on their website, but they don't give you another option (like a mailng address) and they don't give you an email address that you can send inquiries to. Stupid stupid stupid.

Also, I have been finding that I spend a lot of time doing NOTHING on the computer...it is a huge time suck for me. So no Eco-Monday post today and no Project post on Saturday. I also find that if I spend a whole day on the Internet (which has been known to happen) I am a much grumpier person for it in the evening. So I only have four things on my Internet to-do list today:

1. Cancel Country Living subscription (I signed up at the beginning of January and my first issue will be April's!! What the...)

2. Check out Ready Made.com (done...and I will be back since I can't subscribe but still want to learn about how to make cool things out of everyday objects!)

3. Ask for shoeboxes...this one goes out to my readers. I am looking for small boxes, like shoeboxes, in which to store my scrapbooking supplies. I just can't bring myself to buy things like boxes when most people have lots just laying around! They need to be square or rectangular (no circles or ovals, no round edges) and fairly small (no bigger than one foot square). And they need to still have their lids (preferably ones that can come off completely and aren't on a hinge or whatever). Thanks in advance!

4. Pimp cookie dough...this one goes out to you guys again. Lucas is still selling English Bay cookie dough for his latest fundraiser. If you do this good deed for me I will remember you when your kids are doing fundraisers years from now!! Got it? $12 gets you dough to make 48 cookies and will store in the freezer for one year! There are lots of flavours, from your standard chocolate chip to the more exotic Macadamian Nut ($14). And I hear it's just great to eat on it's own when you're having one of "those days." Let me know how many buckets you would like! Thanks in advance.

Later,

P.S. Have been reading the IKEA catalogue again. Only bad things can come from this.

iBlogging

I am blogging from my new ipod right now. That seems kind of dangerous! It takes a long time though...I'm still getting used to the teeny weeny keyboard! But am having lots of fun with my new toy! Other Lisa ...where did you get that pink cloth case you carry yours in? Just so I can be a total copycat!

I'm Not Gonna WRite You a Love Song...

They have been playing that horrid Mini-Pops commercial on tv all morning. So that song snippet is stuck in my head and I do not appreciate it! Weren't the Mini-Pops so much cooler when I was a kid? Or am I just deluding myself?

The topic for my 52 Weeks project is love this month. I guess that's fitting...but so far the week for the project is always my low week of the month! Maybe this week will be different. I haven't quite finished my entry for last month (bad girl!) so I hope this month goes better.

Finished a super cool mini book on Saturday. It's being posted on my Techneeks blog after I'm done here. I am in love with paint and collage and being messy right now! I got my Kelly Rae Roberts print in the mail last week and while I have no idea where it's going to hang, it has already inspired me a great deal! Plus, Naomi lent me her book and I am even more inspired reading about her journey to lead a creative life. One chapter was on letting go of the fear that is stopping you from leading your creative life, and listening to your "whispers". I have decided to take the first step and start looking into art retreats...I know that sounds like a stupid fear, but I have always felt "left out" because I don't "belong to" an artist's community and feel like an impostor when I even think about it...what do I know about art!?!? So I am going to look into classes and retreats that are close by (and less expensive!) and just try getting my feet a little wet!

The Farmer's Market was great again yesterday! I bought mini-bagels this time, with cucumber dill cream cheese...I could eat that stuff forever! Plus all the requisite veggies and pears. I love it there! Check out ...and other song titles... today for my Eco Monday post. Today I'm writing about the controversy behind microwaving plastic.

We're in the last month count down until we leave for Dallas! It is going to be super fun...I can't wait to see my aunts again. It has been way too long! And it will be fun to see Sherry's house...it's every colour in the world! Woot!

here's my mini book...slideshow c/o Picasa. Don't ask me why some of hte pics are blurry and some aren't. I guess I haven't quite mastered the art of taking pics one-handed!

you can't hide forever

I finally found the fake polaroid software. You download it, input your digital shots, and it makes them look like Polaroids! With the white border, and the shady colours and everything!

I'm at work, so I can't try it out just yet, but soon...

Here's the link peeps:

Happy Early Valentine's Day to Me!!

...from Russel.

And what a surprise it was, waiting for me on the doorstep when I got home from work! He is so sneaky! I can't wait to start playing with it!

P.S. Techneek is up.

Qualified!

So Russ didn't win the trip to see Sam Roberts in NY...but he did qualify to see Franz Ferdinand in PARIS! Too bad the trip is the same week we're in Dallas! Can't you just totally see him winning??!!

And I was wrong with my countdown...we actually leave in 4 weeks and 2 days! Woot! Russ has found us a bunch more stuff to do while we're there. But I should really start looking into where I want to SHOP! I do need wedding shoes...

Monday, February 09, 2009

My Dress, etc.

I bought my bridesmaid dress on Sunday. Amy approved, and I approved, so it's a go!! Woot! It's very simple, and the perfect blue! Now all I need are some rad silver sandals!

Oh, and I need to take it back so they can remove the ink tag. Genius.

Here's a layout I finished ages ago and put up in the store. Have I posted it here already? No? Yes? Well here it is anyways!

February Layouts

I'm trying to figure out how to use Blogger's Picasa Web Albums to post my layouts and pictures. I'm still trying to figure out how it actually works, but all of my uploaded photos are already there, so it's worth a try!

You know those fake words that you have to type when you want to post a comment, or do other "secure" things on the Internet? Do you ever read them like they're a real word?

Cause I do!

I should start creating definitions for them...hmm...

Good idea Lisa.

Thanks Lisa.

Now, get back to work!

Red Velvet Art is Live

Road trip to Missouri is in the works...in my head...anyone care to join me!!! The store looks like my imaginary, in-my-dreams house! Woot!

Wednesday, February 04, 2009

Oh My

Isn't Lindsay pretty! Plus a cool blog.

Work called an hour ago...I didn't answer...they were just making sure I didn't get in an accident on the way to work this morning...I haven't called back...chickenshit...

I'm still on the computer. I need to dislodge myself.

Lucas has "destroyed" the living room. All of the blankets and pillows that are usually on the couch are on the floor...with all his trains and cars. That's 6 pillows and 4 blankets if you're keeping score...I'm a bit of a pillow glutton! Should go clean up, then go visit Chan & KC...Lucas' choice, I swear!

later,

Hello Hump Day!

So this is me not going to work today. The babysitter didn't show up, so I changed out of my work clothes and made a train track with Lucas...at 8am! I was up early, and I'll probably need a nap later, but it was nice to be able to get some stuff done before 9 o'clock.

This is a pic of Lucas with his new favourite toy...a stuffed cat! It's name is "Kitty" and Lucas loves her/him very much. He makes this funny high-pitched "meow" sound and talks really funny to her. And now he sleeps with her and likes to have her around when he's feeling cranky. It's funny and adorable!

Heidi and Rhonna's latest awesome-ness. Stupid awesome really! They are selling Rhonna's blog backgrounds (which are amazing and gorgeous and I can't decide!), digital kits, hybrid kits and most importantly, HOME DECOR. They have some vinyl wall decals that are to die for...all fancy and decked out in bling! I'm still deciding if I want to go the wall-vinyl route in my house, but if I do I am for sure going to check these ones out! Here's the link: http://www.houseof3.com/ And they have a fab blinkie for your blog (see Talia's).

Also, for those of you who enjoyed my first Eco-Monday, you'l need to go to my other blog to follow it...I'm supposed to be keeping this one for art/scrapbooking only. Besides, my other blog doesn't get enough attention, so I need to spice things up a bit!

I'm also going to post some new fave recipes, and food stuff there. I made some yummy granola yesterday...yummier than store-bought! And my soup is looking super good with some new additions. So check it out here.

I have already started planning my birthday party for September! Things will probably change lots in the coming months, but I wanted to start writing down all the brilliant ideas I've been having! I'm only turning 29, but I never have a big birthday bash, and I don't want to wait till next year when I have a big number to celebrate (or mourn!).

Here are the two projects I finished on Saturday...I'm posting them here because some people don't actually READ my blog, they just skim for pics! I'm not naming any names (coughchantelcough), but I know they miss this stuff if they're not looking for it!

I am SO HAPPY with how they turned out! And I hope all the positive response I got on Saturday bodes well for the class I am planning at the end of the month! We shall see!

Thanks to Nadia's blog for today's little quote pick-me-up!

Living a Green Life

So I've started reading Green for Life by Gill Deacon. I got it from Russ/Lucas for Christmas...he sure knows what I like! Gill Deacon used to have a super cool tv show on CBC that I started watching after Lucas was born...it lasted less than a year before it was cancelled. It's since been "replaced" by the Steven & Chris show, which makes me dumber for watching it! She spent a lot of time discussing the environment, and how to be more "green" in your everyday life. So I am very excited to have her book! (FYI: She was the host of Daily Planet on the Discovery Channel back when it was brand new!!)

I've only finished a couple of chapters, and it already has me reworking a lot of things in my life. I do a lot already, but I know that I can be doing a lot more. And it's going to take some work on my part, but I'm up to the challenge. And I hope you take the challenge with me...not just for the environment but for yourself. SO much of the things we have in our homes and put in our bodies are not only bad for Mother Earth, but they are bad for our health as well, even though we may not see the effects right away.

I am going to start an Eco-Monday series on my blog. Every Monday I will post a green tip for you, taking my cue from Gill's book. That tip will be my challenge to myself for the week...step by step to a greener life! And I hope you join me in my challenge as well!

Tip#1: How to Make Dinner
This is Chapter One, and for good reason! Everybody has to eat!

Eat Local. Eat Organic. I know this can be tough in Canada, especially if you don't live next to, or on a farm! But we do have access to farmer's markets and organic produce in the grocery store year round. There are two year-rond Farmer's Markets in Edmonton: Old Strathcona and Capilano. And there are a whole bunch more that open up come spring and stick around until Thanksgiving. Just Google "Edmonton Farmer's Markets" and you'll get a nice list. And now that organic eating has become more popular, most grocery stores have a wide selection of organic food. Superstore, with their new stupid renovations, have devoted a whole aisle to organic food and other eco-friendlier products (like soap, cleaners, shampoo, etc.).

I am challenging myself to start buying more of my food from local growers...and if that means getting up extra early on Saturday morning to make it to the Strathcona market before work, than that's what I'll do!

Why Buy Local?? How do you think those steak and potatoes got on your plate? More than likely they had a long journey on a truck/train/boat spewing out toxic fumes, and taking lots of packaging and lots of time (meaning that "fresh" strawberry isn't all that fresh!). Plus, you're supporting your local economy, which is a super great idea in this current mess of an economic climate we're in!!

Why Buy Organic?? You really don't want to know about the kind of chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics that end up on and in your food (and then make it into your body). It's really quite disgusting. Here's a stat for you: "a 2003 medical study in the UK showed that women with breast cancer are five to nine times more likely to have pesticide residue in their blood than those who are cancer free." Yeah...you read that right. Plus, organic farming is more sustainable and less likely to destroy the earth it's using and the people who are working it.

There are so many more reasons to eat local and eat organic...but it can be a big expense for a family to change their diet completely. At least we can try to incorporate as much local, organic, fresh food into our diet as possible.

  • So, next week I'll try to be less preachy...I can get a little carried away with talk of the environment!!

P.S. And just so I'm not accused of plagiarism, all of the facts, and the lovely quotes come from Green for Life by Gill Deacon (2008, Penguin Books Canada)
    _______________________________________

On to other things! The Oil Kings game on Saturday night was fun...we were super close to the ice, which was an interesting experience in itself. But they would only let me buy one beer at a time, and I had to wait a long time, and the beer costs $7.75, but the fries were good!

Super Bowl Sunday was AWESOME! Heather's chili was excellent, as usual, and the game was exciting as well! Interception and turnover in the end zone, which was run down the field for a touchdown!!! Steelers were ahead the whole game, then lost the lead in the last 5 minutes (by 3 points), only to come back in the last minute to win! So Arizona lost (which made the room sad, except for Russel), Steelers won their 6th Super Bowl (that's a record people!!), and Lucas won $10 in the pool. G'Ma Connie walked away with close to $100 (as far as I heard) to add to her "Sock Fund"

Speaking of "Sock Funds", my dad has christened this year, the year of the Sock Fund. This is essentially a "never touch unless there is a major catastrophe" fund, that you keep three month's worth of living expenses handy so you can get at it quick (if there's a major catastrophe). So I'm starting my Sock Fund...and you're all free to join me!

I pre-made a couple of dinners this morning. I think Lucas was confused because to him it looked as if I was making dinner at 10am!! So I quickly made him some noodles for lunch so he wouldn't feel left out (and freak out!). We decided that while Dinner Revolutions is a great idea, most of the meals we really liked we can make just as easily at home (and for less $$). So Russ made some BBQ beef last week, and I made two pasta bakes today. Super easy, and with stuff I keep around all the time any way. I'm going to have to try and find some other good, freezable recipes in some of my books so I can keep this going.

And I need to make more soup. Yummy soup.

Sorry no pictures today! Check out the TM Classes and Techneeks blogs for the two projects I completed on Saturday. My new faves!
