My (Star Wars) Identity

Catch up time on ye' olde blog today! I haven't been the best at sharing fun life stuff lately, so now's the post to remedy a little of that!

Way back in March the extended family & I dragged our tookuses off to Telus World of Science to the Star Wars: Identities exhibit. This was kind of a big deal for our fair city, as I think there are only two scheduled stops in North America for this particular exhibit. Which seems completely idiotic, in terms of the subject matter, but that's neither here nor there...

So, let's see some pictures already!

Dude made it through the whole thing - in about four minutes. And then he complained, so Grandma took him out and they explored the rest of TWOS. Poor Grandma...

Oh Boba Fett. You were such a minor character, but also very bad ass and now have a beautiful cult following. Also, jet packs.
A little Yoda! There were so many great models - some that were actually used in the movies - and drawings and sketches and mock ups and costumes that it was really mind-blowing at some times. I took loads (and loads) of photos. Faves were probably the Millennium Falcon (I heart Han) and all the droids.

Here are a couple of the screens that you completed in order to "determine your identity." This part was just as cool as all the Star Wars gear! (I'm a super geek...apparently). Lots of psychology, nature vs. nuture, how the people around you & your experiences influence you, etcetera!
FYI...I scrolled that cursor all the way to the right on this screen. No small stuff for me!

This is the little audio device we got. It would only activate when you were in certain sweet spots around video terminals, so you could enjoy the content as you walked by (or not, as the case may be). And mine was crappy - as per usual. Me & technology just aren't buddies sometimes!

And my identity...I'm the sexy Twi-lek on the right.

And Russel's a little...umm...species we can't remember! Aren't we cute? And I'm taller than him...ha! Head-tails are sexy, yo.

We were actually talking with my step-dad on the weekend about Star Wars, which actually isn't surprising...he geeked out hard for this exhibit! He remembers going to the local-ish movie theatre with his entire school to watch the first movie when it came out in 1977. Granted, he went to a school of only a hundred or so kids, but that would have been such a big deal!

I have mixed feelings about Disney doing the next set of movies. But could they screw it up any more than George Lucas did with those last three?!?! I doubt it.

And one last one...cause my Uncle is fricken awesome...

I Yam What I Yam

This post is about being comfortable in your own skin. Recognizing what you are - and what you are not- and taking pride in the unique combination of attributes that make you unique and special. And undeniably "YOU"!

It's really hard to have a conversation with another person nowadays if you haven't seen any recent movies or watched a popular TV show in over a year. I was sitting at a crop the other night, chatting with my friend, and we got on to the topic of Glee. And the lady sitting across from us, overhearing our conversation, chimes in "I love Glee". And then Nadine, who happened to enter the crop room just as this came up, chimes in as well. And then the three of them start talking about the recent episodes, and why they love it, etc. And I am left sitting there thinking about that awesome Burt Lancaster movie I watched the other night.

Y'know. The one that came out in 1964.

And today I am thinking about how beautiful and vivacious and clever and wonderful and amazing Greer Garson & Deborah Kerr were, and how they just don't make them like they used to.

I prefer to listen to the radio - CKUA & 20th Century Radio streaming on the internet - or read a book in my spare time. My favourite movie stars are long dead. I don't understand "celebrity", and TV shows hold absolutely no interest for me.

That being said, I love listening to new independent music! You know the bands that no one has heard of yet, that only get played on the indie stations? Or the artists that have been around for seemingly forever, but still haven't been "main-streamed"? Those are my faves! And I buy new music like it's going out of style.

I am a contradiction in terms. I am an old lady & a curmudgeon. I love it when technology brings me my favourite old things, but I hate new gadgets & gizmos. I am the odd (wo)man out in most conversations.

But I am completely okay with all of this. And I have zero desire to change any of that for anybody, or hide it from anyone. Because, to be honest, people seem to like me just fine the way I am! And while I may not be able to chat about the recent episodes of Glee or Dexter with most of my close friends, I have found one person who shares my love of old movies, and independent music, and shares my dislike of television. Hi BFF...

So in addition to being an old soul curmudgeon, and a dork, I am apparently a geek as well. And a Twi-lek...
I dunno...I think her figure is slightly better than mine, but at least I've always got a smile on my face!

Back in November...

Russ & I went to a little cabin out on Pigeon Lake for some games & booze with his buddies from work (and their friends). After the panic attack I had on Friday night as a result of realizing I was going to be in a room full of strangers in a couple of hours (among other reasons....) I had a lovely weekend! Morgan even catered to my ridiculous dietary requirements!

We totally got "lost" going out there. And I'm going to go ahead and blame it on their inadequate signage and outdated internet map. Somebody should have told us we were looking for the cemetery...yep...it did feel like we were in a horror movie! We passed the entrance to the cabins four or so times, and finally just had to call Stu and get him to talk us in....and then jump out at us in the dark holding a beer, but we stopped the car in time!

Stu & Morgan are veritable game-collectors. There were bags and bags of games to be played. And they loved the one I brought the best! Whee!! So we played Cards Against Humanity twice that weekend and left most of the other games in the boxes. It was less funny the second time, and I really (really) suck at it, but it was still good times.

And speaking of the cemetery...

I went for a walk in the afternoon on Saturday, and headed straight for the cemetery at the end of the road. There are some historical graves, but a lot of recent ones as well. I found one that was still just a pile of earth....

The "back door", if you will! If I remember correctly, it had been snowing heavily that day and for many days before the trip so the snow was deep and there are no paths. I brushed off a lot of tombstones to read names & dates.

After I wandered around there for a bit - and saw a deer in the distance - I headed down toward Pigeon Lake. It was still pretty early in the season, so I just stood at the shoreline, not trusting the ice just yet.

And then I was getting cold, I had to pee, and the battery on my camera died so I headed back to the cabins! It was a fine weekend away. Comfy clothes, quiet mornings, good food, great company.

And I even got some stargazing in..."with BFF" (via text). The stars are so beautiful on a clear, cold winter night out in the boonies! Maybe I'll get another one of those before too long!

Do you guys enjoy a games night out with friends?
What's your favourite board game?
Do you hate board games, and think they are the spawn of the devil...??
