Tell A Story - Fashion Revolution Week

In honour of Fashion Revolution Week 2017 – April 24 through 30 – I thought I would do up a little post about how I try to incorporate the purpose of this week into my everyday!

But first, a little history!

Fashion Revolution Week began in response to the collapse of a Bangladesh clothing factory in April 2013 that killed 1138 people and injured many more. The workers knew the building was unsafe, but didn't know how to speak out and were afraid that in doing so they would lose their jobs. The awareness of HOW our clothing is made is meant to encourage people to ask their favourite brands "who made my clothes?"

I like to take it a little farther, and reflect further on "ethical fashion"...what it means to me, why it's important, and how I incorporate it into my closet.

REPAIR

I hate throwing out a perfectly good pair of {anything} if all that's wrong is a simple hole. I can fix holes. I have a pair of jeans that are literally the best jeans I have ever owned. I thrifted them, and I can't find new ones anywhere. I have patched them as best I can, and will continue doing so until they are 100% patch if necessary. And I'm no seamstress.

If you aren't confident in your own sewing skills to mend your clothes - example, I can't figure out how to "take in" any of my too big clothes - consider finding a good tailor! They aren't as expensive as you would think. OR you can check out a local "Repair-A-Thon". There is even one happening this weekend in my neck of the woods! THRIFT

This is my favourite way to be more mindful in my shopping habits, and stick to my (teensy) budget! While it is best to support independent thrift stores in your community, access is not always possible, so the Goodwills and Value Villages of the world make do. I will never let anyone make me feel guilty about shopping at Value Village because they are “for profit”, but I don't shop at Salvation Army because of their troubling anti-gay history.

I have a love/hate relationship with thrifting though, which you can read about in this post.

SUPPORT ETHICAL BRANDS

When you do have to buy new, try and support an ethical brand. Even better if they are a local, ethical brand!

Now, just because a brand says they’re ethical, doesn’t mean it isn’t just a buzz word to help them sell more t-shirts, so do your research! And just because a brand is "local" doesn't mean they are ethical either. I like Everlane because they break down all the background noise in the fashion industry, listing the factory and location their clothes are made in, and how much each item costs to produce. And they have been doing this for years, before many (any) other brands were doing it.

Something that I continue to think about is the affordability of ethical fashion. Most ethical fashion I find online sells items that are out of my price range. I can’t even imagine how marginalized folks who care about these issues are supposed to support ethical brands when a coat or dress can cost as much as a month’s worth of rent! I applaud members of the fashion industry who are working not only to make their clothes more ethical, but also who are working on making them available to more people.

Remember that the best way to bring ethics into your fashion is to BUY LESS!

Do you have any tips or tricks on how you try to be more ethical/mindful of what makes it into your closet?

Once these next couple of months calm down for me, I have committed to trying a 10x10 or capsule wardrobe for the summer. Essentially, you choose a limited number of items from your closet to wear on a regular basis, put the rest away, and see what happens! Over the past 5 years or so, I have been trying to better curate my closet, being more mindful of things I buy. I think that this is the next step in aligning my values with my reality!

One Dress - Five Ways

I am on a new-clothing-freeze. I am trying to learn to live with less. I have too many clothes. I envy those with more clothes and more options than me. I enjoy remixing items in my closet. I am up for a challenge. I really like this dress!

All of these reasons and more led to a little experiment last week...

Truthfully, I never thought I would get sick of wearing the same dress everyday. And I didn't. Even though I kind of petered out on the last day and just wore the dress with my standard grey cardigan. And going to the symphony that night I was really really excited to put on something completely different! Sequin skirt!!

It feels good to know I have this much flexibility in my closet, and with mostly secondhand pieces! It feels good to know that I don't "need" anything new in my wardrobe because I am fully capable of making the things that I do have work, and work well. That being said, I totally bought two cute, new sweaters this week but only because it's darn freezing in my office!

to karaoke!

You know what's funniest about this topic. I was totally invited to karaoke last Saturday night! But I was at a Welcome Home party for my friend who just got back from Australia after living there for a year! I'm such a social butterfly (wink).

When we go out for Karaoke, we don't hit up no fancy hoity-toity place. Wait?! Is that even a possibility for karaoke? Anyhoo...the bar that my karaoke-pro girlfriend always chooses is in a shady part of town - Russ got his car stolen from their parking lot once - and is usually mostly full of UFC fans. Yep. It's a classy affair!

All of that means the more casual, the better. No one's going to try to steal your wallet or coat, if it looks like you might not have anything of value in them!

And try not to look too attractive. Don't want those bar flies hitting on you! HA!

And apparently, all of that means an entirely thrifted outfit! I love it when that happens!!

Mix & Match

I thought I would give you a brief respite from the Disney layouts. But don't worry...they'll be back tomorrow! Until then, check out how I rock polka dots, hot pink & houndstooth. And a vintage/second hand gold "Christmas balls" necklace! Ooh yeah!!

I took these photos in the parking lot behind TM. Yep, I'm classy that way. In fact, I think my last WTW post was conceived in a parking lot as well....hmmm. Anyhoo, that giant pile of snow behind me isn't naturally occurring or anything! Ha! We've got a lot of snow in the past couple of weeks, but not that much! It's the results of the plows clearing that parking lot. I thought it was a good backdrop....to impress my southern friends!

Now I didn't get a cute close up of my accessories outside - cause my butt was beginning to freeze off - so I grabbed one in the car before leaving the parking lot. And in one of them you can kind of see up my nose. So I deleted that. Which means you are left with...

Someone please explain to me why some shirts are lint attractors. This is a simple cotton shirt. I don't understand. And my cute bangles that I bought at VV with Nicole. Speaking of Value Village & Nicole...

You know how sometimes when thrift shopping you find that one terrifying item. That you just cannot believe exists, and was given life on this earth? This sweater/dress thing is it, my friend. In fact, I don't think I will ever get it's glory out of my head. I believe it is one of those handmade rarities that make it into the thrift store aisles. Those giant buttons? Hand-painted. Some of them even have thread stitched through the "button holes" for an added touch. And the little buttons are real buttons. There are easily 40 - 50 sewn over the entire thing. And yes it was stiff, and shapeless, and I really really wish I had looked at the price tag!!

This item DID NOT come home with either of us....unless Nicole snuck back while I was in the change room....hmmm...Maybe this isn't the last we'll see of the Button Dress From Beyond!

p.s. I will never forget the look on the lady's face who caught us in action, taking these shots. For a moment there she thought we were seriously enamoured with this monstrosity. That was a precious sight!

I am a super fan of thrift store and second-hand shopping! I think it is great for so many reasons: great for the environment, my budget, my sanity....

A lot of thrift stores out there are partnered with a charity, so part of their proceeds either go back into the community or, as in the case of Goodwill, they employ people with disabilities who maybe wouldn't be employed otherwise.

All around goodness, people. Plus, vintage is always in style and you can sometimes swing some very sweet vintage pieces at bargain basement prices!

Thirfting

Yes, I know I spelled my title wrong. Shut up! Who's blog is this anyway!?!?

I made a long overdue trip to Value Village last week many weeks ago. Long overdue. I missed you stretched out t-shirts, bad plaid skirts circa 1980 and crazy ladies with their entirely too full shopping carts.

I answered the call, and the Thrifting Gods were looking out for me.

Shirt. Shirt. Skirt. Belt. Purse. Floral Sheet. Neutral Sheet. Book. Book. Book. Book. Free Book.

And since I refuse to tote around a cart or basket-cart, my arms were a-hurtin' by the end! This actually helps prevent me from going crazy overboard and buying too much stuff. Is that even a possibility!? Anyhoo, when I can't balance any more items on my arms, against my chest, or braced up against my chin I know I am done for the day.

Plans for sheets: I am going to (try my darndest) make a skirt out of the thrifted sheet. Wish me luck...I'm going to need it!

Plan for books: well...to read them of course. But they help towards my goal of reading 20 second hand books this year. So...yeah...

I was getting kind of tired of the art wall on my Green DR wall. I mean, how many art walls can one main floor have? So I gave the green a refresher, got rid of the treasure-map inspired paint, and pulled out my collection of vintage wooden frames.

All of the frames, cake pans, and the giant "silverware" are thrifted! I have been saving these guys for what seems like forever, for just the right project. When I was a Goodwill a month ago, I found a stack of metal cake pans that were the most fabulous colours! I went back the next day and bought them, and the whole design formed in my head as I was driving home!

I might add some pretty paper or fabric to the frames, but for now I really like the simplicity of it! Plus, it's vintage & quirky, which I guess makes it "kitschy", which I am totally okay with!

I answered the call from the Thrifting Gods back near the end of September, and boy was I glad of it after. Everything I brought in to the change room fit, was a good price, and was exactly what I had been looking for. What luck!

I found this next photo in a folder at work, but I don't think I ever blogged it. Found the skirt again on Modcloth (Don't Steel My Skirt - still love it), but am now realizing that thanks to my VV trip the other day I own one of my very own!

But thanks to how the waist is built and where the pleats start, mine is more flattering on me than the Mod Cloth one would be.

 Apparently, I needed to get the iron out before wearing this guy. The washing machine is not its friend! Note for next time! The belt is also a VV find from the same trip. It is just the belt I have been looking for!! It is missing one piece that holds the buckle down, but I can make do.

I found this listing on Ruche the other day, the day after I bought my version.

And this is my version of the Posh Professional Ruffle Skirt. I actually like mine a zillion times more because it's not black!

Unfortunately...all is not as perfect as it would first appear. If you can get past the fact that the above photo is so blurry I am not even to be recognized, (and also, where is the top of my head??) I would like to draw your attention to the fact that this dress has a large slit in the back. This means that every time I sat down my arse literally peeked through the slit. Um...work appropriate? I don't think so!! Moments before I took this photo I was dropping the Dude off at school...the arse hanging out is very noticeable on the cold vinyl car seat! I had to rush back home and change before heading off again! Talk about "wardrobe malfunction."

So, note to self: Check for these things before you leave the change room!! Oh...and buy a slip!

It's a New Month!

I can always tell when the new month is here because I get an itching to do some thrifting (in my head that rhymed way better!). I spent a tiny bit of time at VV yesterday after work and scored some super cute finds!

Do you ever find something in the racks and you get that excited, rollercoaster feeling and you snatch that thing up in a hurry and check behind you to make sure that no one else saw the sweet find and tries to nab it out of your basket trolley later? That happened yesterday...twice!

Maybe that doesn't happen to you, but do you feel like a total dork pushing your little basket on wheels around the store. I honestly always get the goofiest grin on my face and try to race myself, or spin the basket around in circles as I walk down the aisles. Yes. I am that crazy person in the thrift store that you go out of your way to avoid!!

I noticed at one point a bunch of my favourite bloggers giving thrifting tips, so I thought I would "throw my hat in the ring" as well (but I'm not challenging anyone to a boxing match, I'm using the 19th century version of the term that Teddy Roosevelt made popular when he used it to indicate his intention to run for President. Not that I'm doing that either...I guess I'm using the wrong idiom...).

#1. Don't stress over getting there everyday and getting all the deals and the best stuff, or whatever. Go whenever you can! It's still fun!!

#2. Don't feel you need to look down every aisle. I never look at jeans or pants there or "blouses". It's just not worth it for me. But I always check out the following: dresses, skirts, "sleeveless shirts", shoes, the wall of plastic bags full of goodies, and stationary. Pick the areas that you really like, or that you are really interested in and really check out everything in that aisle. And then move on.

#3. Another thing that can be overwhelming is the size of the section you have decided to focus on! You may only be looking at tee shirts, but there is a whole aisle and a half dedicated to them! So think of the colours you like to wear, and the colours you hate wearing, and change your focus accordingly. I've noticed that my VV has stopped organizing things by colour, so it's gotten harder for me. But I always pass by the pink items, and usually the black ones, and go straight to the whites, greens, blues and greys. It makes things go a lot smoother!

#4. Look in your size, plus the one above and below. I have found some really cute items in the Medium and super large sections that still fit me! And some things in my size's section just don't work. I may be a large, but there's no way I'm fitting into a large from Guess or Forever 21!!

#5. TRY THINGS ON! A lot of thrift stores offer a very limited return period on items, but then again a lot of thrift stores don't offer returns at all! If it doesn't fit and you can't take it back, just donate it back to them...and keep the price tag on!!

#6. Don't turn something down just because it's too long, or stretched out or "not perfect". When you get it home, add a belt or a cardigan and you might have something totally fabulous!

#7. Grab one terrible item and try it on! Just for fun!! If this dress was even close to being in my size I would have at least taken it for a spin in the dressing room! It probably weighed as much as Lucas, but was much less handsome!

Please Note: Sometimes I don't even stick to my own rules...I bought a pink dress yesterday! But it was too trendy to pass up! Once I wash and iron it, and alter the neckline a little, I'll share!

I do have a fun fashion post started that I hope to finish this afternoon, that will include photos of some of my special finds! I have to go attend to a worm bin this afternoon, which has me feeling much more nervous than is necessary, and then I work tonight at the store. But sometime in there, I'm sure I'll have more time to blog!

On another super happy note, Apple is granting me a "one-time exclusive re-download" of all those songs I'm missing thanks to my lost iPod! So in a couple of hours I'm going to have the Strokes, Lykke Li and Arcade Fire on permanent shuffle!

This month, I stopped at VV for something else (that was the "peach" trip I think) and bought some books. And that snazzy blue bag as well...with old luggage tag still in place! Yippee! So I finished two this month, and will get to the rest in the coming months.


VV Book Deal: Buy four and get one free. They range in price from cheap to ~$12 (and that's for a nice hardcover). I try to pick the least smelly/stained ones!


I think I want to go take a peek at the book trader by the in-laws next month.

Thrift is Back Baby!

Oh yay.

This is the fab stash I brought home with me on February 3rd.

I went to pick up an old book or two for the class I was teaching the next day.

I came home with:

- FIVE books (B4G1free) and I don't think I can part with any of them

- a fabulous woodgrain binder full of photo pages in my size!

- old plastic VHS tapes holders (to be put to use as clever jewelry holders and for a fun blog project coming in March!)

- a Tommy Hilfiger tie that I have grand DIY plans for!

- the cutest house dress, oh my gosh I was swooning when I saw it in my size (more or less)

- Josef Seibel shoes...they are still comfy even though you can tell they were well-loved! (I'm going to wear them with my *new* dress!)

Thrifting...

Even though I promised myself I wouldn't...

I broke my promise.

I find that thrifting is best to do when there is a time constraint. Meaning, I can't spend too long inside and therefore can't spend too much money. I must be quick, and smart, and only hit up the easy departments. Like office supplies, shoes, and furniture.

So on my way home from my coffee date with Naomi last night (hi sweetie!) I stopped at the VV closest to my house. And I found some heavenly sparkly gold shoes (that didn't fit me...sad face), and a rattier version of the bedroom set we threw in the trash last year (HA!), and some great glass cupcake stands (which I totally don't need).

And I made only two purchases. And they are from my favourite department...office supplies, stationary, photo albums...etc. I bought an album and a cute set of cowboy stationary.

I have a slight addiction to tacky photo albums. This one is made for postcards (4x6), and has fold out pages. I have lots more tacky photo albums stored away in my studio!

I have made a new goal for the year...do something with all these tacky albums that I love so much. Even if I just display them somewhere, and get them out of the box I know they're in...

One of my favourite albums ever was made inside an old magnetic album I found for a steal at VV. I wandered through this the other day, and I realized there are still some pages with photos missing! I guess I have another job for myself this week!!

When Lucas and I were looking back through this album the other day, I asked him if remember this trip, and he said yes and asked if we could go back!

So it looks like we might all be headed to southern Alberta after all! 

what is your favourite creation? the one you could go back and look at even a year or two later and still fall in love? I need more of this in my life.

Speaking of antique stores...

K, not that I was or anything, but there is always room in my life for a little antique shopping and talking about antique shopping.

This starts with a story that is not my own. Simone (from work) ran into Heather (step-mom) outside an antique store. The next day, Heather was telling Simone about this amazing vase she saw in that store...purple and sparkly and gorgeous and perfect. So Simone went back that afternoon, and enquired about the vase. Turns out the one Heather was admiring was Murano glass! Heather had been to Venice earlier in the year, and toured some Murano glass workshops there, and loved it. So Simone was able to buy Heather this perfect vase for her birthday! Aww!

And ends with me heading to the little used furniture store in Argyll, way way off the beaten path. Actually, it's on a very busy street, but not in a neighbourhood you would expect to find an antique furniture store, so it's usually nice and quiet in there. And there are puppies. Did I mention the cute puppies?

I am looking for a small dresser (for a future, ambitious, DIY project), but there weren't any. But I wanted to browse. Much to my surprise when I saw the jewelry on display! What the!? I thought they were a furniture and home accessories only sort-of store. I was at that point very happy that I wouldn't be going home empty-handed!

I got lost for a moment in the beads and baubles, comparing golds and silvers, to brass and pearls. I touched each piece, pulled them off their hook, and held them up to each other before putting them back. They just weren't right.

And then I found it...and then I really found it.

I almost couldn't decide between the single giant locket and this beauty, but the multiple strands, and strange cameo in stone sold me.

So she came home with me...

I think I look a little gansta-clown in these photos, but just imagine her with a nice navy shirt, or my sparkly grey cardigan! Wonderful!

i love camp!!

i got lots done today. did some running around while lucas was at camp, finished my last pillow case! put up some pictures in lucas' room, laundry, and more! boy howdy!!

my thrift store and antique shopping ventures lately have been very successful. a couple of weeks ago I found a great green chair in Decade to Decade, but I didn't buy it...ack!! And I've been trying to get back there ever since, with my fingers crossed that the chair would still be there. It totally was, and I totally bought it.

It's lime green velvet (the same colour as my wall), and in super great shape. All it needed was a little vacuuming. Lucas really likes it...he puts his cars underneath and lifts the fabric at the front like it's a garage.

I stopped at Mildred's Antiques today. Lots of fancy, beautiful and expensive stuff in there. So I did lots of browsing and drooling, but no purchasing.

And then I went down the road to the Antique Mall, and found lots of goodies...check it out...

Two bags for my upcoming holiday (the yellow one is super cute, and the blue one is crazy funky), some cabinet cards that have already found a home on the green wall, a globe bank, and a tobacco container. I figure that will be good to keep little journaling cards organized. The letter holder is one I have been keeping an eye out for, for a long time as well. And I love the kitschy fruits painted on the front!

they are all double sided with different fabrics in the same palette - turquoise, green, orange, yellow and a little splash of red. this picture totally doesn't do the colours justice...what is with the light today?? one more thing to check off on my 30 Before 30 List! Yay!!!

I did up a fun DIY taking some inspiration from these pillowcases. check back Friday for the full details.

note: I am by no means a sewing expert...I'm super novice actually. So these pillowcases are really crooked and completely anti-perfect, but they were so easy to do! Cut to fit an old pillow. Pin right sides together then stitch all the way around, leaving a big opening to put the pillow in. I stitched up the hole with some coloured embroidery floss because I can't do that slip-stitch thingy to save my life! Just adds to the quirkiness of the pillows. Try it out...

Orienteering was awesome tonight. Back to my old stomping grounds...the UofA. Lucas always spends the first leg complaining that his legs are tired and he doesn't think he can make it. And then he gets over himself and has some fun!

He especially likes the cookies at the end.

today

here are three layouts I completed today. Lucas was up last night with what looked like bug bites all over his torso. So that means I was up as well, and I am sure feeling it today. I need more coffee and a little nap wouldn't hurt...hmmm coffee and a nap don't really seem to go together! oh well. plus dinner-plans don't seem likely to happen. maybe Russ will have a genius idea.

I am really in love with the new Sassafras, as you can plainly see. But I've also been using some old stuff from my stash thrown in for good measure. And since I've been trying to put things back where they belong, it's taking me less time to get stuff done and it's way less stressful when it comes to clean up time. I still have a giant mess following me everywhere I go, but that's just something I will always have to live with.


I am working at the Creative Stitches show this weekend at the Treasured Memories booth. Friday morning and Saturday, all day. Maybe I'll see you there! Plus, my aunt has invited me to some Close to My Heart party on Friday night...but she told me it was free and said there would be booze (hopefully also free), so I'm okay with that!


Drama continues with the Playschool Board. C'mon people, it's only Playschool. I mean, really.


I can't believe it's October already. I have Lucas' Halloween costume planned out, so now it's just a matter of me following through. But Halloween is on a Saturday this year, so I will have all day to make it! Ha!

I really think this year will be the one I finally get some nice fall pictures of the family. I always forget, or put it off, or something else comes up and then everything dies and the snow falls and I'm stuck. This year...

Thanksgiving is coming up...I can't stand Thanksgiving. I wish we had plans to go out of town. All the family get-togethers and the food and the sitting around waiting and doing nothing...it drives Russ & I crazy. My friend Ashley and her family have the right idea...they go to Banff and shop and wander for three days. We went one year, and it was so wonderful! But it seems to me that the trip was cheap because we had a "coupon" or something, so it's unlikely to happen again any time soon. Heck, I would take any trip anywhere if it meant I didn't have to be here.

Am hoping to get some other crafting done today. Am making a little something-something for Miss Chantel today...I promised her some fun mail and I haven't delivered! Next week I promise (revised promise). And maybe for others as well! Ooh Fun!!!

I should go. I really wasn't joking about needing more coffee. It's getting close to my sleepy time, which has been getting worse and worse lately (I think it's because of the changing seasons) and I really don't want to have to take a nap today. What am I? Old?
