Our Camping Tradition

Without fail - okay, with some breaks throughout the years - we have gone camping with my step-Dad's family every August long weekend. We head north-east to Ross Lake, take over one of the group sites, and generally be rowdy for three days!

Mom, Dude & I swim in the beautiful lake.

And I usually make friends with some wildlife.

We play "Camp Olympics".

We eat...and eat...

We make Dough-Gobbies and smores and pie iron pies.
(and eat some more!)

We sit around and chat, or draw, and just enjoy being outside in a beautiful location with awesome people!

Next year there is talk of heading to a different lake, and maybe even on a different weekend. I'm not too worried about all of that...it's the time spent that counts.

It's Bikini Time

And pat-on-the-back time, because I wore one everyday! Except the first day. As soon as we got registered, and the porter brought our bags to our room, Dude & I put on our suits and jumped in the pool that was literally right outside our door. Let the vacation begin with a bang! I put my regular suit on, my backup suit, because I still wasn't sure. I still wasn't feeling 100% confident.

But by day two, I thought: "I am in Mexico with my family and a bunch of drunk buddies of my brother. I can do this!"
(I was photo-bombed many times...I love my family...)

And I think I pulled it off with aplomb. I felt great, beautiful, and I got an amazing tan! HA!

My boobs & ass only popped out once. Well, twice, because I didn't learn my lesson the first time. Getting out of the pool is tough when you are only wearing a smattering of fabric. Yep.

And I didn't leave the dork at home. No sirree...

I survived my first bikini test run! And now I am looking for any excuse to wear it again. Anyone planning any backyard pool parties in the near future?

I'm halfway decent at canonballs!

Mexico Teaser

I have so many photos to go through from Mexico. And most of them are amazing, if I do say so myself. I thought I would leave you with this one, which kind of sums up the simple awesomeness of this vacation.
And don't you worry. There are lots of bikini pics to come...wink!

Good night friends

Disney - A Debriefing

I was a reluctant traveller. Many an email and chat were had with BFF before the trip about how freaked out I was to be leaving the country during my holiday break! I didn't want to miss seeing my brother & his family (in from Victoria). And I wanted to spend my holiday sleeping in, and scrapbooking, and hanging out with friends and family, and getting a head start on cleaning out my stupid studio! But Russel was adamant....and I will admit that I did (eventually...more or less) enjoy myself!

I took a bajillion photos! Ha! I've got to give Disney credit for a lot of things, but the biggest one is their attention to detail. Every ride, building, garbage can, and churro stand is decorated & on theme. So I did get a lot of random pictures of the "embellishments" in the parks, but thankfully no garbage cans. Well, not on purpose at least! And most of my pictures are kind of terrible in quality...oops. I thought I would share with you the photos that remind me of the best moments, the highlights of the trip, the most memorable...

When Lucas saw the Hollywood backdrop, and we all thought it was Radiator Springs! Pretty much the look on his face for most of the time was worth all the crowds, and uncomfortable plane rides, and long lines in the world!

Our first glimpse into the world of Cars Land was a giant Red driving down the street! I will admit that I was pretty excited to see that as well!

During the Jedi Training Academy Show, when Darth Vader slowly emerged from under the stage. HA! Lucas - and all the other kids and adults in the crowd - were so pumped!

The beach! It was raining, and chilly, and empty - except for some crazy surfers and even crazier tourists - but it was completely amazing to race the waves with Dude.

When we asked Lucas what he really really wanted to see most of all on his last day at Disneyland, he answered without hesitation: "DJ's Dance Party". Essentially DJ drives into the centre of town, plays some music, and puts on a dance party. His "ladies" invite kids up to dance with them, and it's generally just an awesome time. Lucas did NOT want to join in the fun directly, but he did watch intently all the times we caught the show, and do his own little dance safely on the sidelines.

Lucas reads every single sign he sees. Always. This proved to be at our detriment in the Parks, because for every ride there is a sign detailing the style of the ride. And Lucas' buzz words were "high speed" and "turbulent". Every time he saw those words or some variation on the theme he would make sure to tell us in a loud and panicked voice that this ride would not be fun, and it would be scary, and he did not want to go on this ride, etc. etc. Even Mr. Toad's Wild Ride was met with disbelief and anxiety! But the best was Space Mountain. He knew it was a roller coaster, and he knew it was a big deal, and then he read the sign! Oh man, did we hear an earful on the walk through the line! Afterwards (yes, we are the worst parents and totally made him go on it!) he told us it was the "worst time ever" and that the ride "gave him a heart attack." Drama drama drama!

Meeting McQueen! He and Mater traded off their spot in front of the Cozy Cone pretty much all day, and there was a continuous line of excited kids (& parents....geeze louise!) ready and waiting to get their photos taken with them. Dude was not happy about being in that line, at all! But I told him that Mom & Dad really wanted to get their photo taken with McQueen, so he would just have to wait with us. See how happy he was when we got to the front of the line...?!?!?

Major Observations: It was SO BUSY! I knew that the parks would be crowded at this time of year, but I so wasn't ready for the actual amount of people, everywhere! The Christmas lights & decorations are cool, but I wouldn't want to make an annual tradition out of it. It was nice to see and experience, but I'm good now! Bring your own food! Not only is it expensive to eat in the parks, with all the people around this means that actually getting to eat takes way too much precious time out of your day! Take time to just appreciated where you are. I know for a fact that Lucas could have just stood in Cars Land for three days and been satisfied with his vacation. And I could have done the same at the beach. And we did, as best we could. That's what made the vacation awesome. Say YES to everything! Every time we asked Dude if he wanted to go on a specific ride, he said no. Every. Time. Even if he didn't even know what the ride was! Saying "yes" on a vacation means you get to experience more things, and even if you don't like those things in the end, at least you can say you did them. Ahem...Space Mountain.

And I had a good time overall, but I don't think I want to travel over the holidays again for a long time! Listening to my sister and my family talk about all the fun stuff they did Christmas Day was enough to make me feel that whatever I gained by going away, I missed even more by being away from home.

Thanks for making it to the end of the post! That was a doozy...no more Disney related posts for awhile. Until I start scrapbooking them that is! Aye yi yi!!

I Miss The Ocean

Living where we do - (almost) smack dab in the middle of Canada - doesn't afford many opportunities to go to the beach. We've got some nicer lakes around, and feeling the pebbly Alberta sand in my toes is okay and all...but I really miss the ocean.
Even the cold BC one!

Sandy Beach Toes, Dontcha Know

Background: My new blog-buddy Nicole (and some of her blog buddies) do up a "What To Wear" post every second Thursday. And I thought I would play along. The theme this week is "What to Wear to the Beach". And thank heavens I have been to the beach lately! Actually, when I really went and thought about it - which is a rarity for me - I realized I've been to lots of beaches lately!? What!? But you get sweet Pacific Coast beach today, my friends. Enjoy!

My must haves at the beach (today) are:
- hat & shades to protect all my sensitive bits from the sun & wind
-  comfy shorts, comfy and fluorescent tee, sweater (for northern Pacific Ocean beaches specifically)
- shovel & pails

For the making of epic sandcastles.

This one was legendary.

I mostly find swimming in the water at beaches yuck-tastic. So no swim suit for me. Wading is always a YES though. I love love lurve the feel of the waves splashing up around my feet. Even if the water is fricken icy cold, which this particular point of ocean definitely has as a selling feature.

Oh, and since there are others playing along...

Road Trip Re-Cap

K. There are WAY TOO MANY photos for me to do up a proper "re-cap" post. Dude! 10 days gone equals 640 photos. I can't even attempt to cover the highlights without doing at least a week's worth of posts! Oh dear...

But I will try to capture the mood and the spirit and the essence of the Kercher Fam Road Trip 2012 Edition...
Vancouver Aquarium. Love those jellyfish!
Stanley Park. Giant leaves and people paths.

Capilano Suspension Bridge. Just about peed my pants. Lucas takes a sweet photo!
Best sushi dinner ever. Sat at the bar and watched the chef all night!
U-Pick in Abbotsford. I did a little "winning" at a rope maze. Strawberries were also "best ever".

Vancouver. I am a dork. Russ takes an umprompted photo!? What!?!

Even though I am having the worst possible hair day, I quite enjoyed the ferry ride from the mainland to Vancouver Island. It brought back a lot of precious nostalgia!

On to Victoria...
Inner Harbour. Me taking a photo of Russel (way way in the distance) and the texts I'm sending him in response to the "where are you?" text I just received. Awesome...

Munro's Bookstore in Victoria. A great little shop. I picked up a "Dan Recommends" and a novel by an author I enjoy. Both on the July book list.

My brother is SO AWESOME!!!

And Ucluelet...
Climbing rocks and climbing trees.

Drawing in the sand. Second favourite beach activity.
Biggest dang barnacle I've ever seen! Family flash!

Lucas taking more photos...and me being goofy, again! Whale watching tour.

Heading toward home, with Mt Robson leading the way.
It actually took me a long time to get in "vacation mode". My head and my heart just weren't there. They weren't stuck back at work or anything so mundane. They were stuck thinking about the same things I was stuck thinking about in town. Once I got passed all of that, I was able to enjoy the trip, but I still missed being away.

I have learned that I don't like these go-go-go vacation, where we are in a different city every couple of days. I loved being in Portland and Mexico which despite the polar opposite in location and style of vacation, they were similar in the fact that once I unpacked I was good to go for the week! I had time to explore and discover and relax. That's the kind of vacation I can get behind.

And now that I've put that out there, I'm going to go the complete opposite direction and profess my new-found love and desire to go for one of those multi-day hikes out in the middle of nowhere. With everything I need on my back. Camping. Tenting. Back to the basics.

Go figure...now if only I could convince someone to accompany me. Read: plan the whole entire thing and let me tag along! BFF...I'm looking at you!
